I checked a stretch of fence through the woods yesterday that hadn't been used in a couple of months, and a lot of the plastic insulators looked as of they had been whittled away; most will have to be replaced they are so badly damaged. I assumed it must be some creature, but I had never had this happen before. I've seen unused insulators be out for years and stay the same. What could this be? Are squirrels known to chew on plastic insulators?

Squirrels, grass hoppers and rats will all chew them
If you can see the ttoth marks it's proabably either squirrels or rats, if the marks are fairly wide most likly squirrels

Never had an animal chew on an insulator that was carrying a hot wire - if they did it would be quite an accomplishment! LOL

It would also be what the little turds deserve :lol2:

Like a bird sitting on a 4000v powerline, small animals like squirrels can climb the posts, chew the insulator and never be grounded, thus, won't receive a shock--assuming they are wooden or otherwise insulted-from-ground posts. Even if it's Tee posts, if they don't touch the wire itself, they are safe.

Thanks for the replies. I assumed it was an animal, but found it odd that we had NEVER had it happen before. I asked my brother if he had ever had an issue with it, and he said he had never heard of it. We repaired some fence a few years ago with insulators that had probably been sitting idle for 10 years and they were not bothered. Very interesting that they suddenly decided to make a buffet out an entire stretch; learn something new every day.
