I just bought a 24' long by 7'7" wide commercial truck type cattle guard. What type of concrete bunks do I need to be looking for to help mount this thing OR are there other methods? I open to all suggestions. I will have a back hoe come out, do the dirt work/install etc.
From what I can tell it only needs 2 sections of pipe spliced back into make 100%, well worth the 400.00 I am paying for it I think

You need two cement seals or runners to go under each side. That may be a little tricky finding 24' ones. They are L shaped so just be sure one of the inner L sides match the depth of the cattle guard.

The first 2 or 3 runners on the left look good but the rest look like they need to be replaced. You can buy 16' with out wings for $800-900.

The one thats missing and the 4th from right need replacing upto the 1/2 way point. The rest seem solid to a "hammer test" The wavy ones dont bother me. On the L concrete bunk, do you think there is any issues using 2 each 12'ers per side? Thats a good price on the 16',where are those sold at? Last time I bought a 16', we paid 2200.00 for it. I could not find anything cheaper back then.

My personal prefered method would be to excavate about half the depth and pour a slab . bolt the cattle guard down to the slab. Build up road base to grade.
There will be a pretty good hump at the guard to keep it from filling with dirt.
Keeping dirt out must be figured in design.
Wings are a must . seen many a old cow that learned to snake round the end post.

Saltbranch, what are those vertical pieces in the middle of your grille guard?
the vertical pipe was used to hang a gate. There was one direct oppsite on the other side at one time, its been torched off.

I was referring to the brush guard on the truck.

Ohhh....those are fishing rod holders i use to carry my surf rod and reels. Keeps them out of harms way and they dont get covered in sand like stuff does in bed of truck. One is cocked over from pushing a jeep...gotta straighten it back up before next fishing trip

Gotcha. Interesting. Should work well.

Yes you can use two 12'. It will take 2 sets and they are around $500 per set.

I don't reccomned digging and that more than you have to, to level them out. That's just more that will fill in later. Just get 4 loads of material and build up to it.

We don't use wings any more. Too much of a pia to fence to them. We weld side on the cg or do it with wood posts and 3 boards.

Is that CG located around Sinton? It looks familar.

You can pour a 5.5" slab with rebar and forms for less than five hundred. Bolt it down with wedge anchors. It'll never move or settle. Wont grow grass in the bottom.
Weld another vertical post to other side to tie fence to . A diagonal pipe welded on each side of that to form A. will suffice for a wing .
Filling the gaps in the A with piece of cattle panel makes it pretty dam bullet proof.

By the way the pipe is rusting out on that cattle guard in a straight line facing the inside... it looks like they used 2 7/8" rod cut tubing. Look at the ends of the pieces that are rotted off and see.

... but it looks like crap.

Drives me nuts when people go thru all the work to set a new cattle guard, build a fence or entrance up to it, and then end up wiring cattle panel in the gaps on the wings or under the swing gate. :bang: We don't use wings or swing gates any more on cattle guards for that reason.

Plus, the thing is 24' wide... do you really need wings

With respect as always brute.
I think your confused. I didn't say wire anything to anything. I'm talking about building a metal frame and welding cattle panel inside it.
I can guarantee you. Mine wouldn't look like shyt.
I built more than you've drove across son . And got paid for every one of em.

Width has not a dam thing to do with the need for wings :lol2:

 it could be 100' wide and they would still hit it.

Welded or wired it looks the same.

That may be but I assure you I can give you a run for your money. I have set many of cattle guards across south Texas...

What are wings for then?

The only thing I have seen those wings for is to give the big float more room when they move a drilling rig in. That angle gives the big trucks a couple more feet on each side. As much over hang off the floats as they have its real easy to hang a straight post there.

Brute. Were obviously talking about two different things . I'm talking about a "baffle "if you will . on each end where the fence meets the guard. it keeps a cow from going around the end post. Its quite common for them to learn how to do it.
You gave your idea. I gave mine....I did not insult yours and I wont .it's a fine idea.
I know salt he's been to my place. He's full grown man and a smart one. He will do fine without either of us. I have given what he ask for . a idea.
