A cow lost one eye to an injury last fall. Now we are into the fly season - - and the socket has a discharge and is infected. I gave her antibiotics and considered a pink eye type eye patch.

Any tips ?

The only problem that I can think of with the patch, if you do not get the socket super clean you may end up with maggots hatching under it.
Sounds like she needs an antibiotic, but I would run it by your vet. You may not want to close it off.

The patch sounds like a good idea to me. If you irrigate it with some insecticide before covering with the patch you should take care of any potential maggots but once patch is on it should keep them from laying eggs in it. It sounds like the flies have been your problem.

She is a good red simi x herf cow that I retained out of a stocker heifer herd.
I have her penned up for treatment and a bit of grain supplement. She looks rough but her calf looks great.
I plan to let them graze the homestead for the rest of the summer.
