I have been having from one to two calves born everyday for the past three weeks and I'ts a constant fight with the dam mexican buzzards. And I'm not just talkin two or three of them here.Seeing as many as fifty in flight or circiling a cow and newborn.It's a constant battle from sun up to sun set. :mad: :mad: :mad:

22-250 works good . I built a trap last year out of hog panel . 12 gauge full of #6's clears the trap .

Both. These mexican buzzards have been known to kill a momma if she's down and weak and also kill the calf. They are not like the ol american turkey buzzard.They've been known to peck holes in che cow until she bleeds to death.

I lost 4 calves last year to them . They would peck their eyes out when they hit the ground . 2 of the babies were trampled by the cow as she tried to keep the sob.'s off . They haven't been as bad this year but they get culled pretty regular . Supposedly you can buy a permit from texas parks and wildlife . But the way I see it they owe me for my loss .
 
Nothing anymore fun than a buzzard trap and a pump loaded with 6 's.
I shoot everyone I see. I have seen some keep the cow occupied while others sneak in and take the calf out.
One of those devils every break the skin might as well shoot the calf or cow infection will eat them alive.
 
I prefer shooting rifles,but in the last two weeks I've shot over 2 boxes of shotgun shells.

I keep the shotgun on the mule loaded with F's (lead) 30- 22 cal pellets to the shell. It will reach out and touch them.
 
My neighbor has some old International Truck front ends { hood and fenders] lined up against our joint property line fence where I have my hay storage and gate. A pair of Mexican Buzzards have a nest in one of these front ends. I've been working on my fence and every time I pass the area, two adult Buzzards fly out onto the branches of near by trees. When I go down there in the morning I will take my 12ga. Is it illegal to shoot these foreigners if they don't show their green cards?

Here in Texas they are suposedly protected by the gov=ment but my cattle are protected by me. :nod:

Yep, they are protected. Why, I don't know. I guess because they eat the dead. Like the other buzzards they peck the eyes out first. Unlike the others, they have have to find their food by sight. This is why you see them hanging around with the turkey vultures who find their food by sight and smell. The mexican types though, are far more aggressive. I have found dead calves with their eyes gone and although I can't prove if they died by natural causes or by the buzzards, I'll shoot the damn things anyway.
 
Anybody got a picture they can post of a Mexican buzzard? I have heard they are in Alabama now so it is just a matter of time before they show up here. I want to positively identify my target.............

You can tell them by their flight pattern they kind of look like a big bat. They will flap three or four times and then glide and repeat. They can't glide like a turkey for long periods of time.

No picture here but they are easy to spot . Black heads smaller than the turkey buzzard . They look like they don't have tail feathers .

Hoss, they are black with white wing tips and they are in Alabama.
 
Ok.....black vulture. Yes I have seen them. We talked about them in our cattleman's association meeting last year. I have see them around many times. They have eaten afterbirth from my cows but haven't touched a calf yet but I will be more vigilant. Nobody calls them mexican buzzards around here so that threw me. their a heck of alot more aggressive the the old mom and pop buzzard,, where the turkey buzzard will take flight when you get close.. they will hold their wings out and stand fast till you close enough to be a threat had one swoop down and tried to grab a cat last fall, she ran under the bushhog just in time
