i bought a prifert headcatch. its supposed to be automatic but i cant figure out how. its an hg91 model. i always just pull the handles but this one is supposed to close on em when they bump it i guess??
its got a handle across the top with a set of holes on each side of the rod on a plate. usually ive got help but i needed to be at both ends of the chute by myself and the one i needed to band got thru.
(i wasnt alone but my wifes pregnant so she cant be gittin in the pen)

i know i know...thanks

This is one of those eaier to show in 5 seconds then to explain in 10 minutes. The closing of the headgate is driven by the large spring on the left side. On the base of the handle is a plate with a notch in it. With the gate closed, swing the L shaped (it's upside down) part that is attached to the top of the spring so that it rests in the notch.
The part iwth the holes in it also has a handle facinf towards the front. Open the gate with the handle, it'll be hard if the spring is set right, and place the holes of the top part over the projections on the top pf the neck contacting parts of the head catch. You can adjust the width of the opening by using the different sized holes or for big stuff skip the holes and use the holw part with the holes, i.e. a pin resting at eighter end. The less of the pins you have in contact with the piece with the holes the more sensitive it will be to closing whne bumped. The model numbers are long gone off of the two we have but they look the same and are used the same.

that sounds right. im gonna look at it tonight when i get after that stupid steer. (see other post today)
likely youve got the same model as me by the sound of it.
thanks.
still...like ya said, easier shown than told. but at least ive got an idea now

i tried it but im still not sure it works right. i think i know how it works now though...i think
seems to close halfway when you set it but doesnt close tight enough. gonna try greasen it up and see if that helps...

When I'm going to use ours that hasn;t been used in a while I oil every moving part with a generous dose of WD-40. When it's set, if you pull down on that handle that comers off of the plate with holes in it it should slam shut pretty fast. The spring may not be tightened enough either. When we got the first one new the sping was basicly in place but it hadn;t been adjusted so it didn;t put enough pressure on the upside down L thing that puts the pressure on the handle.
I'f you pop up here to Lebanon I'ld be glad to show you
One other thing, if it's lubedenough it won;t stay open if if you don;t have it set to auto. The weight of just the handle will make it close.

hahahaha! pop up to lebanon! thanks. ill keep messing with it. it seems like the top handle that slides back and forth doesnt line up wiht the holes right. it is supposed ot hold both sides open right?
