Identify this bird...

Pictures are tough but might check Osprey.

Judging from the amount of water movement in the 1st picture, it was sure after something that could swim but I can't see it eating anything in the 2nd picture that was about 1 minute later.

I've never seen an Osprey here, but have seen lots of hawks and owls.

Juvenile Osprey.
Lots of osprey and eagles here, were not that far apart.

You live between Lake Livingston and Lake Houston on the San Jacinto River and both are covered with Osprey and Eagles. Ten years ago you never saw one here now it’s fairly common.

Shrike now that is something I haven’t seen in years here. Sometimes called Butcher birds.

Your right, I live farther from the river than GB. Our area has quite a few large lakes, in the last few years there has been a huge raptor increase in the area of the fish eaters. It was rare to see an eagle or osprey fishing just a few years ago, now it’s uncommon not to see one. I have no clue why our population has boomed.
Neighbors and I regularly see bald eagles and osprey around our stock ponds. Guy that lives in Houston has a really nice stocked catfish lake down the road. The birds have been working him over.

Never seen an American Bald Eagle here, tho there is a series of lakes about 10 miles West of me called Quantum Lakes that had some a few years ago. They frequent Lake Conroe too, in winter. Mostly I see hawks, buzzards, vultures and a pair of Great Blue Herons and of course, cow birds.

On a separate note, I fished up at Lake Bridgeport on Sunday. I couldn't believe the number of Canadian geese that have made that their year round residence. I guess they do well there as we saw quite a few with chicks in tow.

Eagles and Ospreys have homesteaded Sam Rayburn and Dam B lakes.
I posted an osprey nest from earlier this spring on Rayburn. Every time I would troll up close enough to get a good photo with my phone the adults would fly off.
I don’t fish lake Livingston, Conroe or Houston the environment is the same I would assume it would fill their needs.
I do fish Galveston Bay system and do see Ospreys I haven’t seen an eagle on the bay system.
The osprey are easily recognized by the way they carry caught fish. They line the fish up head to tail with themselves in flight.

Several lakes out in this area do eagle counts every year to see how many pair or nesting on the lakes in the timber etc; Population is growing I"m told
