We planted grass a few weeks ago and now have these weeds coming up in it. Can anyone identify them? Any idea if bermuda grass will choke this stuff out?
It has a bunch of names wild white indigo is probably the most common, Baptisia leucantha, Baptisia alba. There is also a wild blue indigo that looks pretty much the same except for the flower color.
It's supposed to be toxic to livestock. I've cut it with poor success, used 2,4-d with poor success, remedy seems to work the best.
Since you are around Houston I would be inclined to say that is the seedling version of bladderpod or senna bean (both are called senna bean or rattleweed around here) especially if the site is often moist or poorly drained.
Despite their supposed toxicity to cattle we have never had a problem but that is not to say you won't. If I'm right, the bermuda will most likely not get high enough quick enough to bother it.
they are super easy to pull up until they get about 4 feet tall or so. i have sprayed some but i dont remember if it worked well or not. they are legumes, dont have much a root system at all. just a little node or whatever legumes have. if you have a few or they are all in one spot i'd just pull them. call me oldfashion.
We don;t have this senna bean here. I've spent several hours a day for the past week cleaning out the indigo that in a young plant looks identical. I hate the stuff but the birds love it.
