ID semen code

Can someone explain semen code collection date. It has 4 numbers and they are 3354. I understand when they are 5 or 6 number code but, NOT Four ( 4 ) the semen came from ABS, have not been able to contact any one yet with explatation.
I do know it is from a Polled Hereford born in 1973 named Vindicator.

Just got off phone and ABS TECH told me the date of 3354 collection was 1983 DEC 20 === 1st. # 3 is yr code===next 3 # is 354 th, day of that yr.

Holy crud you are using semen that is almost 25 years old.Did you just by it or has it been in your tank for that long.If you bought it from someone else who has had it in their tank for twenty years I don't think I would expect it to work ;and is it cc,s or the old modules?

Why wouldn't the semen be any good? We have semen from the early 70's that has been used to flush with excellent results, and still have old ampules from that same time frame or prior.

Not everyone has a nitrogen contract and maintain their tanks.It is surprising how many guys let their tanks go dry and then start up again a few months later thinking that the semen and embryos will be fine..Not all people know that you need to have your tanks checked for leaks and old tanks need to be replaced also they need a minimum leval of nitrogen at all times.You obviously maintain your tank and are fortunate to still have that expensive irreplaceable semen that is still viable.

We are using semen from a bull that has been dead for the better part of 20 years - great calves.

As long as everything stays frozen until use - no probs.

I understand what you are saying now hillsdown. That is a very good point. I actually know of someone just as you described--they have let their tank go dry for years and now hope to put some nitrogen in again and be good to go to AI this spring. I'm a little skeptical about putting semen in a tank that hasn't been maintained as well-especially if it hasn't been checked for leaks.

Nebraska Sandhills let's hope the person they get to fill their tank does a complete check.I don't care what happens to them but some of these idiots sell and/or collect on insurance when they lose their semen and embryos.
