First we have found this year. Have seen a couple dry cows that were a pair when we turned out.
 
you figure it's grizzly or black bear?

I know some people here who lost like 20 out of 25 calves to wolves.. again, shoulda made rugs out of them!
 
While I understand your dismay, he looks like he faired pretty well to have had an encounter with a wolf or bear. Hope you don’t have any more issues.

It won't be the last, there is no shortage of predators here. 10 days to 2 weeks of daily flushing and antibiotics.

Is the range land all crown leases? Or is it deeded and could stand some clear cut logging? When wildlife become a problem here my solution is strategic habitat destruction and it works very well.
 
That stinks, they don't have predator control by aircraft anymore up there? In Alberta in the late 80's they'd fly and shoot wolves every day the weather would permit. As I recall the bounty on coyotes was $50 and maybe even a $100 some years.

The push to introduce wolves in the lower 48 has proven to be illogical and with deadly consequences.

This calf was hit on deeded pasture where we our later calvers are. Lots of recent clear cuts here and lots 30 years old.

Our provincial governments talk lots about predator control and have spent millions trying to find out if they actually eat meat but very little has been done in the way of mitigation. There have been some aerial kills up north. Maybe someday the political will will do what is right for wildlife and livestock alike.

Well that really stinks, and if the government doesn't contract hire a trapper they won't put a dent in the population. Government employees are not very good hunters.

Either a black or grizzly bear. Typical wound for them.
Wolves usually attack from the rear and those that escape can be missing a big portion of a hind leg or the bag area..
 
I wouldn't put up with that, you apparently have a problem and maybe more than one. Once a varmint finds easy prey it's impossible to chase them off. You need to make their happy hunting grounds not so happy. A farmer use to tell me "kill them all and their spawn" I'm sure you've delt with this issue before, good luck and take NO prisoners.
