I just can't believe it!!! Went out to do chores and there in the lot was my oldest (5 yr.old black baldy that I have posted pictures of)cow licking off her MONTH early dead heifer calf :( :mad: !!!! This is the second, early, dead, calf this year, the other was the premie twins! Called the vet and she said if there was an infection of some kind going on all the cows would abort in a short period of time. There was no warning with this one. I was out with them yesterday, no swelling in the back end like the twin one had. Vet thinks it was a sudden thing that triggered it! I only have 4 calving this spring, one left to go! That's 50% loss. Now I will have two open cows all summer! Could ship this one but she is my favorite, the other is a registered hereford that we couldn't get back what we paid for her up at the sale barn. How do you all do it with a BIG herd?? Sorry to cry on your shoulder, but hubby's at work and your all that's left :lol: !

Is this one of the cows that was fighting? Maybe she was hit just right and slipped that calf because of the fighting.

No she wasn't, and I didn't see her get hit by the two either, but anythings possible! It's melting and thawing here too, so she might have slipped on the ice. Maybe have to try fall calving!?

What kind of vacccination program are your cows on if I may ask.There have been some problems in this area with late term abortions.Vet seems to think not vac. against the Hardjo strain is the culprit. There are a few doc's on here that might be able to help answer this.

How often have you bought something and had probllems with it, then was able to sell it and get your money back.

I used Triangle 9 +type II BVD per vets recomendation. I've asked 4 different guys we know that have beef cows and they never heard of vaccinating beef cows!! Their idea of a mineral program is a trace block thrown out in the pasture. They say beef are tough and don't need anything extra! This is what I have for "mentors". I've read this board and brought up things mentioned here and they think I'm nuts. They pick up the cheap bulls at the sale barn for breeding, it's a wonder how they get by. Here I am trying to learn and do right by my cows and I'm the one having troubles. I guess I can't say they don't, one guy last year bottle feed 6 out of his 11 calves because the calf wouldn't suck(think he intervened too early). He still kept those 6 open cows all year and the same bull, he's already bottle feeding one of this years crop. Anyway, I guess such is life with cattle. Makes holstein bottle calves look pretty good right now......a whole nother batch of troubles.. :shock: been there done that...that's why I wanted mama cows, almost forgot :lol: !!!

WisRose;

I know some of the people around here that practice the same type of husbandry as your "mentors" up there. They're alwasy the first ones to whine about why our calves grow better, are healthier and bring more at sale time then there's do.
Just remember like the dog trying to cr-p out the peachpit. This too shall pass.

I'll try to feel better :D . I am so ready for spring, we have 6" of snow yet!! Having calves is what I look forward to all year and this is what I get :roll: . I will have to settle for looking at all the cute calf pictures you all post. :D

i don't have an answer for you, with as little information that is available i doubt anyone does for sure if dun doesn't!
the only thing i can offer is encouragment not to give up!!
i repeat
DO NOT GIVE UP!!!!!!
sometimes bad things happen only to be a god send in the end!!!!!

dun, the old man never touched any of his cattle & i never heard him whine about anything in his life. and i would never have been afraid to compare his cattle with anyone's. never seen anybody's grow like his

What are you feeding?

We have good green hay in the barn. I stay away from the moldy hay. I was reading the classifieds yesterday and found some red angusXhereford that Jerry Huth from Huth cattle co. has for sale. I looked on the map and they are only an hour away. E-mailed him on price. Don't know if I sould get anything yet though.
