Its been a long time since I've lost my temper but today I went ballistic. In April I decided to update two entrances onto a piece of property that borders a state highway. Since its a state highway I had to get a permit and posts bonds. I have made several calls to the permit person and they are either out on personal leave, out on vacation, out on missionary work or will definitely call me the next day but to no avail. Was again promised I'd be blessed with their presense two weeks ago and "they forgot". I got in touch with them today and I explained myself, my feelings in very clear and concise terms. I hate to lose my temper but this has been absolutely ridiculus.

what are you talking about Dun. A person can build a whole house and any barns they want in your area without so much as a permit or inspection.or at least the way I hear it.

yep depends on what county you are in

but you try doing anything on a state hyway right of way you have to have permits and do it to their specs

Got sit in the shade with a tall glass of sweet tea and remember you have spent some of your time trying to work with people do not seem to work at all.

Call them every morning at 9am and keep bugging them til they get out there.

That's correct. But waiting for someone to return a call or show up when scheduled is a fools errand.

Its just extremely frustrating. The whole thing is a no brainer but they want to make it into some big job. I hate to lose my temper but it just seems they want the authority but they don't want the responsibility. Your right Vette, if I'd gone on and done it they'd have had the world on me writing tickets and telling me what a lowly slug I was for wanting to improve something.

I needn't do that now. Hate to admit it but I dropped a name and I think I'll have the paperwork in short order. Hated to do this cause I hate to pull strings or use politics but unfortunately it seems this is the only way to get something done.

I figured dealing with them was going to be slow so I allocated 2 months. I'm going on 5 now. I'm just the opposite on this statement. I may be slow to commit but when I do if I'm not there at the specified time you might as well start looking in the hospitals or the morgue.

You brought the GEICO spot with R Lee Ermy as a counselor straight into my mind with this story.
Hope you get your entrances quickly. You say they are "existing", so imagine the delay if you wanted "new" entrances onto a state highway.
Our county has a culvert ordinance, but no one is charged to enforce the ordinance. Do as you wish.
Indiana gets real zealous about it's state roads, however. The DOT has some fantastical standards written. They start with the most expensive and you have to bargain them down. They assume you are building an entrance to a Super Wal-Mart--you have to convince them it's a farm.
It never hurts to know the boss.

You make a good point. These are just existing entrances and I am under the AG exemption but I have to build them up to today's standards which is a lot more than just a pipe and dirt. I have to also stablilize it, put up silt fencing, put in so many inches of gravel and grass it and also put up shields on the openings of the culverts so if some drunk is driving down the ditch he isn't hurt. That's all fine and I know I got to do all this to be compliant with the AG exemption I just can't seem to get the stupid permit. If it were commercial I would just toss in the towel. I would have to hire an engineer to do a environmental assessment and build a decelleration lane and give it to the state. My friend just had to do this and it cost him - I think - $20,000. Oh, and you have to have it wheel chair accessible AND put down those little red mats with nipples on them so it will be friendly for all the blind pedestrians who don't drive.

I hope you're joking. This is your farm, not a public accommodation. Doesn't have to be accessible to anyone but you. Access laws do not apply to residences.

I thought that the Texas DOT had the market cornered on incompetence and arrogance. They are operating on absolutely NO money They are not able to do anything relating to building or maintaining roads--they have no money. Hard to imagine that they can pay thousands of employees to sit around and complain about having no money.

Down here we don't even get the excuses from them. Their arrogance is so ingrained that if you try to talk to them, they pretty much just tell you to screw off.

Good luck, Jo. :tiphat:

Jim, I think that describes every state in the country. Here they've mowed the roads very little, but I know they have the same amount of equipment that they've always had and I'll bet they have the same size work force. It's just easier to say "we don't have any money" The farm/ranch is one of the last places left that says "I don't have any money, but I'm gonna have to find a way to get it done anyway". John mentioned the R Lee Ermy commercial and I like it and I think there are a ton of people that could learn something from thinking about that commercial. The men in this country have been feminized to the point that they whine and cry like little girls. If we ever expect to get out of this mess the men in this country are gonna have to grow a set of balz.

Alway better to ask humble forgiveness than prior permisson. And thats when you use the name.

I built a house a few years back on a state highway that had a circle drive and two culverts. I didn't have to apply for a permit, but the state engineer had to come out and inspect the site and give you a letter OKing it, with the culvert size and all the other requirements. When you were finished they had to come back and inspect it. I waited on them for about two weeks, having to tote materials across the ditch and finally gave up and called a culvert salesman to order the culverts. He told me what size they would require from previous sales he had made in that area. I ordered the culverts and the gravel and put them in. We were in the painting stages of the house before the state ever showed up. I had to make a few phone calls but they stayed just exactly as they were put in and nothing else was ever said about it again.

Mo says they are all out of money, cutting all kinds of school programs etc. But they seem to have the money to build a new highway that is going to take our house.
We keep asking and they keep saying its going to happen soon. We were supposed to have got a letter last week telling us when they wanted to meet and buy (or evict) us out.

We heard the purchasing dept forgot to contact some other agency and delayed things for a month. How can they forget??

The road would be nice, but the one that is there seems to work fine. Evidently the money has something to do with the
"wonderful" stimulis money. How do I express exteme sarcasm????
