I have an angus cow that has it, my first one. In December our only local vet came out and told me to leave it alone because wasnt getting bigger and it was not an open wound. Obviously a bad move. Now she has a lump that size of a softball and an open wound (white looking) the size of probably a silver dollar. #1 What should I do?
#2 If an antibiotic helps, are there any that I can put in a feed (like we do arymycin)?
The problem with her is that she has a 4 month old calf and she's really high tempered because I have been trying to put a topical iodine on it. That may have not been the right thing to do, but my vet seems to be reluctant to help me.

I'm no Vet, but if I have to cut on this myself, I will.

Rebel, What I write to you now, compare to posts that follow...and handle as you see fit. Get the cow into a chute or headgate, or rope her and tie up her legs so she can't get up and stomp you. Near the bottom portion of the lump, in a vertical line (up and down so it can drain), Make a 1 to 2 inch cut, you can do it with a pocket knife, The sharper the better. Squeeze the pus and crud out of the pocket, then pour some iodine into it, a cup or so, the excess will drain out when she stands.

Give her a big shot of LA-200 or Duo-Pen. Rest assured she will be fine. Won't even have much of a scar in a few weeks.

Thats it, simple.

As long as the lump is due to infection and not the lumpjaw caused by a malignant growth I'm pretty much with Rafter E on the treatment.

Take care and good luck with your cow.

When I have had it I opened it at the bottom so it could drain and then stuck a water hose in and washed it out good, squirted some betadine in and they usually heal up pretty good.
