I have a calf that I talked to the vet about today and he prescribed nuflor and banamine.

The calf has pneumonia and soon after he got the drugs his breathing eased. He still has some scours that I have been battling with sulfas and electrolyes.

My question is can I give him a sulfa or neorease now that he is on nuflor?

I don't want to cause a reaction between the meds or cause problems.

I can't get a hold of the vet so I though someone on here might know.
Thanks in advance

Yep. Nuflor + oral sulfas is actually one of my favorite treatments for scours.

How does a 4 year old kid purchase livestock? You mean you bought the heifer for her? I dont know any 4 year olds that know enough about livestock to make a conscious decision on what to buy let alone have enough money to purchase any.

Yes, I bought her for her but she used her own money and she is the one looking after her. We both go out to do chores and she does her heifer. She named her 'Claire'. I think this kid is going to be a vet or something.

We only paid $35 for her. They were pretty much dumping calves last week. She is very healthy and spunky. ;-)

Nuflor is for respiratory. I would try some probios to get good bugs back into gut.Neomycin sulfate is in milk replacer & you can give nuflor with it. If you get this calf over it .I'd vaccinate for pastuerella 3 strains of it. & c&d clostridial. I've had better luck with my calves by doing this.Every time you use meds. you also destroy good bugs with bad bugs Probios really helps with that. I had 2 calves start going backwards after I treated them. Put them back on probios 3 days later looking good want to eat again and everything. I'd would of bet anybody they both would of died.

Hunny...way to go. Let the young lady "help" all she wants. Hopefully the responsibility and work ethic will stick with her all her life and someday she will be "your vet". ;-)

That was rude. That 4 year old has probably forgot more about cattle than you'll ever know.

I am not having any luck getting a handle on the scours. I am giving him lots of eletrolytes between feedings. At the vet pharmacy there was a package of something in a powder form with some sort of tetracycline in it used to treat viral scours. Does anyone know if this can be used while the calf is on nuflor? The vet I deal with is almost impossible to get a hold of and I don't want to leave this.
Thanks

First ,I would like to thank you for being your childs advocate. We need more parents like you.How old is the calf?I'm not aware of anything that will work very well on scours caused by a virus. As far as tetracycline and nuflor that is okay, but I don't think it will help.Is he getting weaker or is he holding about the same? The main thing is to keep up with the fluids.A hand full of oatmeal in his milk will help too. What is his temp?

That's an oxymoron... tetracycline is an antibiotic, and antibiotics won't touch a virus. Don't waste your money.

Hunny Do,

Cut back on the amount of water you mix the milk replacer with. Use the amount of milk replacer you would use for a 4 pint bottle, and mix it with 2 pints of water instead of 4. Give the calf probios daily and keep fresh water out for it.

And definitely, keep up the electrolytes...but break up the feedings. Give 2 pints every few hours.

Also, put out a little dry calf feed.

I've got my fingers crossed for you...lady luck plays big part.

we use calf span and trivetrin. Works well. and predef too. but that will change this year to anafin.
Did you take a fecal sample to the vet to identify the strain of scours? I read the posts but i might have missed that. It could be codsidiosus(sp). Or BVD. A stool sample might be worth its weight in gold cause then you are not spending $ unnecessarily, and will get the right drug to treat. If it is viral scours the drugs you use will just prevent a secondary infection from setting in.

Temp is 39.1 degree's C (don't what that is in F). It might be a little off because I have a heat light on for them because it is so cold and they have been shivering.

The calf's belly is quite full and round as well, but not full of air that I can feel.
