when she is standing straight up on her two back feet. Yikes!!!

We had her in the chute the other day to give her a shot and she starts looking up. I think to myself, Its never good when they start looking up. Anyway here she goes and I start popping her with the paddle stick on the face and she doesn't care. She gets straight up in that chute with her front feet and legs over the top. I'm out of the way by that time. My husband starts to go over there to try to do something and I hollar for him to get back. We stand back and watch and she decides not to go over and she politely climbs back down.

We have two chutes one has a bar across the top and this one doesn't. What is the reason for not having something on the top to keep them in. This chute is pretty old.

We had open top trailers back years ago. We got a store bought cover for one and put pipe across another. The pipes seemd to get bent for some reson or another. It goes back to when we had bramah bulls.

Gate, I had a momma cow in the chute last year with her teats stopped up and I had to get them goin'. The calf was outside.

Anyway, I fixed her up and backed her out of the chute and she went ballistic and made a rum at my brand new pen. Got her front legs over a panel (6' off the ground) and there she was. She kept tryin until she got the panel down far enough to where she just climbed on over. Darndest thing I ever saw. Everything was OK once she got hooked up with her baby. And folks want to try to make pets out of these animals!!!!?

Oh yeah. I think we all know cattle will look for holes. The sky is a great big hole to them. I try to make the hole issue a no issue for them in the pens.

I was unloading a big steer out of a half top trailer. The steer had some attitude problems to begin with, and for some reason I opened the front comartment up first and he jumped out the back. Not a good deal but yet pretty amusing to watch, owell live and learn. Now I am always worried about open top or half top trailers. Thanks Kaneranch

You ain't seen nothing until you have a cow rare up like that in the back of a pickup truck.

Or watched one step from the cab roof to the hood to the ground. (Not my truck)

Maybe it's a regional thing, but what is the benefit of a half-top trailer?

We have the opposite problem...a couple of the gals like to lay down; as soon as the head catch is closed they drop like a prom dress. Had to open the side to get one out.

The funniest thing I ever saw was a heifer calf that we weaned. She didn't want to be in the corral and stood on her two back legs and did little hops and over a 6' tall fence. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it, I also wish I had a video camera with me. Tried putting her in again, same thing. She was supposed to be shipped out. Thankfully her mother is our genius cow and she decided to wean her herself. From that day on she didn't get any milk but she also stayed out with her mother. We still have her, she'll be on her second calf this year. She goes by the name Ballerina.

It provides you with endless fodder for storys and would be great f rhauling llamas, camels, giraffes, etc.

My Mom got behind an Eby trailer hauling a giraffe a couple months ago. They were filming some kind of Noah's Ark movie down the road from here. She took a picture of it, that trailer must have been 10' high inside.

  Thanks, Susie. I haven't heard that one in years.

Oh.. cows will do the nutiest things in chutes.. I am seeming to remember one going up and flopping over on to its back but that had to be just a nightmare.. I have several who have adopted the dropping to their news bs or laying down.. You see them coming, I shipped a bunch of them this year and everytime we run them through the naughty ones get put on a list. If I am looking for culls , chute attitude is a factor. Shipped one yesterday that had moves like she was on suspension wires like an actor in the matrix.. Dang she was a kicker..

Dad told me of one fattened steer they had. They loaded him in an open top trailer to haul to the butcher and he jumped out flat footed from that trailer. He said he landed on all fours right next to the trailer and stood there nosing around looking for cubes.

My grand pa bought two Charolais cows when I was a kid, the guy delivers them to the farm in a pick up with cattle racks. One of the cows couldn't wait until they got the gate openeed to let her out. She climbed up over the rack and landed on the roof of the pick up, then on down over the hood and was home free. I couldn't believe it, but I saw it happen.

Saw two like that yesterday at the Florence Ala. sale barn. One a bull the other a cow. Had to shoehorn the cow out. Put a lasso on the bull and a bunch of folks did a tug of war to get him up and out.

When I was a kid before I realized all animals can and will jump I was helping a neighbor get his yearling bull back in his fence(at first could not figure out he got out) he was running straight for the fence si I decided to step out and wave my arms to make him go toward the gate after he jumped me and the fence we found out how he got out.He was in the trailer going to the sale barn before my heart came down from my throat.

If you have to rope and drag an animal into a trailer, the open top comes in handy. Some of them have a 'ball' on the top on each side to run your rope around, and then pull the animal into the trailer with a horse.

Thanks. Makes sense now. I prefer a 22mag and a front end loader.
