I can't believe No one has posted about the cow that had quadruplets.
It happened in Texas seen it on facebook yesterday
Maybe someone will find it and post a link
All 4 calves were living maybe it was Cwgrl8's cows if not I bet she will say she had a cow that had sextuplets 5 yrs in a row

Some people North of us had a cow that never had just a single calf. Always had from twins up to 4 calves at a time. And did this for several years.

My uncle's mother ran a herd of cows they did a news story on her
About all the multiple births her cows had I think one yr she had like 7 sets of triplets and several twins
This happened for several yrs in her closed herd I can't remember the exact number but it was up there
She lived near Hulbert Ok

What I want to know is how do you make it happen? I wouldn't mind tackling a set or two of those.

More common that you loose three or two. I suspect. How to get many calves at the same time? Give hormones...

If you're wanting multiple births (I don't!), the US Meat Animal Research Center, at Clay Center, Nebraska, has been working, since about 1976 to develope a composite line of 'twinning cattle' - seems like some figures I've seen indicate that 50+% of their twin herd produces twins, year-in/year-out.

25+ years ago, ABS carried a couple of the MARC 'twinning' bulls; don't know that there is any semen out there with the usual AI outfits, but MARC has a sale of these cattle almost every year, and I think you can purchase semen from some of their twinning bulls.

Mathmatically you shouldn't increase your number of freemartins would you? For every set of bull/heifer twins you should get a heifer/heifer set shouldn't you?

Twins are a pain during calving season and I would rather not have any. But when it's selling time I'm wishing there were more twins.

Slick? why would you want more freemartins?

Don't want the freemartins, especially. I'm after a pair of bulls or heifers, tho. Besides, if I did get a FM they'll bring in about the same as a decent commercial at the sale barn, or if I market it right I can sell on the halves for quiet a bit more than commercial. Lots of reasons to go that way with full bloods. As far as being a pain... I've have lots of spare time to bottle feed if need be.

There are worse freemartins in the world than fullblood piedmontese freemartins. They will beef up good.

ABS still had some as of about two years ago but I think they tossed it. They sent out an inventory list of all the old product laying around and it had a couple of twinners on there. My genetic collector half was screaming "BUY IT, BUY IT ALL!" but my cow sense half was saying "Dump that crap!"

Not to mention the price of seedstock.
I wouldn't force a cow to have twins. A pair of dead calves are worthless and a vet bill will make you crying.
