Hunting gun?

How much would a decent scope run me? And all of the accesories for the rifle? If the gun were $670.00, how muchwould it completely cost me?

The short mags were another $250.00, with only a blued barrel.

I have a 300 Win, bought it 5 or so years ago, and am not too proud to say that I dread shooting the thing. I'm 6'1", 190lbs, and that sucker pops me like a rag doll. I never even carry it unless it's raining, (ss), and use my old 270 most of the time. My confidence in the 270 far outweighs any benefit that 300 might offer. Buy what you feel confident with, will do the job you need, and don't buy a bigger gun just because you think it will impress others. You will be the one who pays the price in the end.

Thats why I suggested the 45-70 in the 1885 high wall 30 inch barrel kicks about like a 410. Now the boy might not be big enough to tote it weighs in at a little over 10 pounds.

Nothing wrong with the Tikka's but before you buy do a quick google search worded something like "Tikka recall, or Tikka barrel recall. I remember a year or so ago they were having some kaboom (barrel exploding) problems affecting a certain model. Just make sure the one your looking at is not one of them that was recalled or in need of a recall. Don't want you to buy and then have to send it to the factory for repairs or have it explode in your face.

Regarding optics. You can spend as much or as little as you like but will usually get what you pay for. Some spend as much on optics as they do on the rifle. I don't use a Leupold on any of my rifles even though they are the best but do use their rings and bases.

Got to also throw in a plug for the good old Remington 700. There is a reason most military and law enforcement snipers use them or at least their action after they have been customized to fit the shooter.

I think a 300 mag is a exellent choice, I have a lot of friends that use 300mags. One is a outfitter that has seen it all, he personally uses one. The caliber he hates is the 7mm mag., he says when someone shows up with a 7mm he just cringes becuse he knows he'll end up chasing a blood trail. His theory is a 7mm goes thru without producing enough shock and it's the shock that puts, elk anyway, down fast. He may use a 300 Weatherby Mag. I'm a 06 man I use 30-06 and 25-06. I also like 270,257 Roberts and the good ol 30-40 krag. I like Reminton or Ruger. Don't forget that bullet placment is most important and if a gun makes you flinch you are worse off. I usually don't get involved in gun talk. I feel time is better spent scouting and getting to know the game you're after. ;-)

Good luck

Caustic, you forgot the .308! ;-) 8)

Kind of hard to beat a 30-06! .308 is really the same thing. Around 1960 the Army redesigned the M-1 (30-06) to the M-14 (7.62 mm NATO round or .308 ). Both are excellent and ammo is very plentiful and reasonable.

My confidence in the 270 far outweighs any benefit that 300 might offer.

As far as whitetail cartridges go, not many people will argue that point. I'd like to have a smaller rifle for whitetails. My youngest already snagged my 30-30 and my oldest ended up with the 243. I was hoping to find a 270 under the Christmas tree but it never happened.

.243 works well for elk and deer. have used my .243 many times, even at 300 yds.

I wouldn't recommend using a 243 for elk. Whitetails even have a tendency to run off when hit by 243.

.308 for elk, it will get the job done but you need to use a heavy bullet , and with this heavy you could have acc. problems, barrel needs a fast twist to stableize the bullet may be ,dont go to the woods unless your gun hits where you put it,i recomend 220 grain bullets,if your rifle will shoot them well, this to me means not more than a 3 shot group that is 2.5 to 3" spread . if your rifle will do this over and over under similar condions go hunting,i dont consider a gun that shoots like this to be a good shooter, but for an 18"-22" or bigger vital area this will get the job done. :cboy:
