Pheasant season opened here in Montana this past weekend... I was out on a some ranch that my buddy said he knew the owner...
Well late on opening day, I ran across a hole in the ground about 2' in diameter and tried to peer in and see how deep it was... ( Kinda reminded me of a thread in another section about people that have left their wells uncapped (uncovered).
Eye's aren't all that good anymore so I dropped in a rock and listened if I could near it hit the bottom... Hearing ain't much better though so I opted for a bigger rock... Still nothing...
About that time my buddy shows up and both being intrigued at the possible depth of this hole found an old railroad tie nearby and dragged it over and dropped it in the hole and both listened intently.... we heard it as it bounce along the sides of the shaft, but nothing from it ever hitting what I would call a bottom...
We decided ta go back ta huntin' when all of sudden we hear this dog yelping and running like the wind... Bounding over everything in its path, this big 'ol light colored German Shorthair pointer leaped up high into the air and went right on into that hole in the ground... We both ran over and looked into that hole again, but not another peap from that pooch... So again we went back ta huntin...
An hour or so later, we ran across the owner of that ranch and he asked if we had seen a German Shorthair a bit on light side... At which we told him about our experience with the one we had seen running like the wind and leaping into that hole...
"Well" he said... "That couldn't have been my dawg because he's old and can barely move anymore... And besides, he was tied to an old railroad tie"
