Select sires is carrying a 3/4 Simmental bull, HPF Optimizer (http://www.selectsiresbeef.com/index.ph ... ge?bid=325). There is much I like about him, and he is out-cross for us, so we used a few straws of him. I must say, he will be used again! We are super happy with his two calves we have had.
This first one was just born June 1st, in the middle of a downpour (1 inch in about 10 minutes!). We weighed him the next morning and he was 80 pounds (281 days gestation), which is on the small side for a 4 year old cow that has had two previous calves. She is a 3/4 blood, Upgrade sired cow that is moderate in size (averages 1200 pounds). Here is his birthday pic:

This cow has been bred to a bull with a white face (Analyze This), and this is the first time she has thrown white!

Here is a heifer we had in November. I have posted her before, but she was born to a 22 month old first calf heifer and was 50 pounds at 275 days gestation. We weaned her at 189 days of age, and she weaned off (NO CREEP) at 551 pounds. Not bad for a first calf heifer.

I think it is safe to say if you want some white on the calf, Optimizer can do it. He "seems" to be calving ease (I would use him again on a heifer), but that is for you to determine in your own herd. But the quality of these two calves is super, so he will be used again without doubt. The docility on the heifer is amazing (likely, the best calf we have ever had!). She walks up to you in the middle of the field, she comes up into the barn first and patiently waits for her feed (she is in the show string), and will put her head in the halter if you have it in your hand. That is why she was weaned early, my son wanted to show her and fool around with her since she was so sweet! The bull calf seems to have the same disposition, but it is really early to determine that....

On your counsel O' Great One, I AIed Price and Tatum to Optimizer. Price is a super star so she don't need too much help.

BTW: Wonder who the traveling clown was that AIed Gem to Optimizer. I have AIed about half the cows in your herd.

Between your place and mine I got a good run going. THE MAN WITH THE SURE HAND.

Kris: Tatum comes by her white through Lucky Dice since she is half sister to Kim Kardashian. How much white is that going to throw?

I know Lucky Dice carries the spotting gene. But our 12 year old Lucky Dice daughter whom is solid black except for just a little white on the bag, her calves usually always turn out solid black. She has had two whom had a blaze face no white anywhere else. Those two calves came from a Star Power son whom had a big star on his face and our current blaze face Packin Heat son. Thought the bulls passed the white around with them two.

Firesweep, nice heifer.

Here is a pic of the bull calf I took today, 4 days old.

He is still very sweet. I can walk up to him with no problem still.

Yes, Ron AI'd this cow last year when we were away and he was watching the farm for us. But I do not think you have half the herd count yet! Come on back out and try to get a few more Spring cows bred... you might hit that number!

You can never predict how much white will be thrown. It all depends on if they are a spotter or not. Get them tested if you want to know for sure... if not, it is a guessing game!

I thought I would update this with some pictures.
This is the heifer pictured above. We took these when we were in Iowa at the nationals, before we knew how she would do.

And, she placed 19th overall bred and owned at the National Classic

And that June bull calf? Well, he looks pretty good too!

The docility on these two calves is AMAZING, and they are growing like weeds. That bull calf is not on any creep, I only put grain down to get him up for pictures, and he looks fantastic! I plan on using Optimizer a bunch more!
If you get the Register, on the back cover of the July/August issue is the HPF ad for their fall sale. At the bottom left corner is a HPF Optimizer heifer, pretty darn nice!

Very nice, and it's always a bonus (for me anyway) when they pop out with that blaze face! We've got a nice little blaze face heifer out of a Pays To Dream daughter and Milestone son, I'll have to get some pictures of her on here.

I’m looking for some updates on optimizer.
How is the mature size on the cows? Disposition good? Does he throw white other than the face on solid black cows? Improve udders?

We have several in production, including the one pictured above. All of our females are about the same size as the dam. We have never had more white than the dam has. The udder on the females is the same as the dam, so he does not improve nor make them worse. In our limited numbers, he seems to take some milk away, but we really do not have enough lactations to judge that. They have the MOST amazing dispositions, and are very easy going. Have you seen the updated picture of him? He is an amazing bull to look at! We use him a lot in our program, we like him.

Used him on a Steel Force heifer last year. She delivered a nice 67lb heifer, with ZERO white on her. Big boned, big footed, real deep and wide bodied. Not very clean fronted or long fronted but that's ok. Disposition wise she is avg. IMO. I will be breeding this heifer soon.

Thanks very much for the reply’s. I’m needing something that is a definite udder improver, won’t add much milk, won’t add frame. Whiteface or not doesn’t really matter. Although, if two bulls were exactly the same one whiteface one solid black, I would pick the black.
I have a few upgrade daughters that I like very much. He seemed to improve udders, but they are bigger than I like.
