I am beginning to question when will fertilizer become cost inefective. We put it out right before it rains, look at the new growth the next day and go wow, that really worked. But have you ever seen how green and fast it grows with just rain and humid temps. We look like the middle of summer around here with the warmer temps and rainfall. I have not thrown fertilizer on my grazing pastures yet, but really how do you know it works as well as we have been trained to believe. I will fertilize my hay fields at the end of the month. But with every rainfall grass grows like crazy anyway. But we credit the fertilizer

You wont see the results of fertilizing. You will see the results of not fertilizing. I know this sounds kind of smart alecky but it is true. By mining your fields or pastures you will lose production. That is why soil testing is so important. You have to keep things in balance.

One way you can tell fert. is working is to compare a spot that got missed by the spreader to the rest of the field that got fertilized. Large difference in volume. Do this comparison 2 weeks after you get rain on the fertilized field.

A fertilized field (dark green when the nitrogen kicks in) will have much higher protein content than non fertilized. Also by fertilizing your rainfall will cause more grass to grow. If it is a dry year, you will wish that you had fertilized
