What age do you buy? How old to start to show? Just interested in local stuff. Also, what breed do you use?

I dont know if youre totally new to cattle, but the class will depend on your show that you plan on bein in. The age really depends on what your purpose is. Just remember its easier to halter break a 200 lb calf than a 700 lb one. Breed- I'd say what works best in your area... I have some nice Polled Herefords that do pretty good in my area. Some breeds cost more for the nicest show cattle than others. Hope that helps a little

Comair, that is truly a whole can of worms.

What breed are you interested in?
Do you have the facilities set up for halter breaking calves?
Do you have the time, (involved in halter breaking, feeding, and caring for a show calf?)
Are you showing, or is this something you want to get into for younger children?
ETC.

I know I didn't answer your question, but more info is needed.

My kids want to get into local show. I have good facilities, but don't have a clue what show are all about. I just have a few stockers now.

COMAIR, in this case... if its with your kids.... I think you should get in touch with your kids schools ag teacher, 4-H Leaders... something like that. A lot of information can be spread on boards like these, but there not gonna help as much as someone who knows the area, competition and other info. thats just what I would do.

An excellent answer.
To that, I would add, visit some shows in your area, talk to exhibtors, and see what is best for you.

Always good to see young people involved with cattle. There are fewer all the time.

if your fat show is in sept-oct then you want a spring borns calf which is march or april. if your fat show is in jan-march got with a summer or fall born which is june-late septemeber or early novemeber

Best advice is to visit some shows in the area, and talk to the people there. There are several sites on the internet which have good advice on getting started. I would stick to the universities initially. Missouri, Colorado, and several other state universities have a lot of information available online.

Talk to some other people that show around in your area like 6M Ranch said. when is the show your kids plan to show in? Do the people show alot of club type calves or more like slick calves? How much money are you willing to pay to get a calf?

GREAT ADVICE. Go to your local and State shows and talk to anyone who will. Try to find people who look like they actually know what they are doing. You may end up showing Goats, but that's OK if it's what is best for your family. I recommend showing Maine-Anjou or Simmental heifers. They can be born any time, you can show a heifer through 24 months of age, and there are no "Slick Shows".
