How much area ?

Help Support CattleToday:

Personally, I gave up "sacrifice areas" two reasons. First, sanitation. It was hard watching them lay in 2 feet of mud. Second, more importantly, I found that if I gave them a big area they still had some place to lay out of the mud AND I found that the area they'd sacrificed into mud, came back in full (and fuller) bloom the next year as long as I kept moving them around. It looks like he## right now out there and it's always hard for me to believe this time of year that it'll come back, but every year, it does. I actually see more value in a drought/summer sacrifice area than a winter one.

I feed hay in the same area for the year but usually open all the gates and let them run the whole place during the winter, unless Im fencing them out of rye grass. Always felt like it spread the manure better.
