I have been thinking about buying some 850 lb beef steers although most of my experiance is with holstein steers. My question is could I easily bring a 850 lb beef steer up to 1400 lbs in 150 days or am I just dreaming? I know I would be pushing it with a dairy steer but I would think a guy could make a little money feeding some of these steers coming off pasture.

Proper finsih isn;t determined by wieght, it's determined by condition/finish

A 1,400 lb steer?

That's a big angus. I suppose some might finish out at that weight but none I've ever raised. Most run in the 1000lb - 1150 range around here. I've got some now that are supposed to go 1300, but I have my doubts.

As far as 150 days, you are talking 3.7 lbs per day which is probably wishful thinking w/o implants and/or just about full grain.

As far as finish/condition what else should you look for other thAn, well developed brisket, fat deposits around the tailhead, no visible ribs or spinal bones, sleek coat etc????

Wishful dreaming. Try minimum of 180 days and not with full angus. Charolais/angus, 15 months weighed in at 1250 without full feed.

Be happy with 1100 in that time frame.

I agree the time period might be wishful thinking but if you look at local market report from the sale barn most of those steers weigh in at 1300-1400lbs. Maybe its different because I live in Iowa but 1100lbs is light in most cases unless its a small steer.

I believe the bef specialist said to take the (frame score x 100 ) + 600lbs toget your finish weigh.
Frame score (6 x 100 = 600) + 600 = 1200lbs finish weight.

Our vet said you should be able to get a steer to 1200lbs by 15 months of age.. if they are of good quality.
