I have a steer with a hernia at his navel. I talked to the vet and he give me an estimate of $150 for surgery to fix it. I also have to haul him 45 miles to the vet. He also said said on one this size, 450 to 500 pounds, it can be risky and might lose him.
I have about decided to just take him to the sale as he is. What kind of dockage am I looking at. He is in pretty sound condition other than the hernia.

What would y'all do?

Any docking he may get is better than the loss of him and having a vet bill in my book.. However, To answer your question I don't know how much but it beats a blank.

Yeah, that's the way I feel about it sky.

Have you thought about putting him in the deep freeze? I had one slaughtered earlier this year for the same reason.

I gotta say I don't think the docking is gonna be so substantial that you can't make a financial gain. If you need beef there ya go but I sure do hate eating up profits.. Literally

How bad is it? I've had alot of them from raising baby Holsteins, after you bottle feed them they start sucking on each other and some will get a hernia at the navel. On those I never got hot very hard but they were often in with a bigger group and not to bad looking.

Denver I don't really know how bad it is and neither did the vet, if it is a hernia at all, but it looks bad. He was only looking at some pictures and said it could be a infected navel but I've been giving him LA 300 and the swelling doesn't come down so he thinks it is probably a hernia.

Is he also high in the back, or just backed up against the fence?. That hernia will cost you, but not bad enough to not sell him. I think he will still bring over 200cwt.

Bad picture, I had him backed into a corner trying to get a picture. He's got a good back line.

If he brings 200 cwt I'll be satisfied.
I've seen alot of blind calves bring 140cwt in the last little while. Hard to put a exact number on what someone will pay for flawed cattle, but I wouldn't be suprised at all if he brings good money.

Go to the sale and no sell him if your not happy with the price. He doesn't look bad to me, but you know how them buyers are. :D

Well I sold him this week and they hit him hard. He weighed 460 and brought $540.50. That's only $1.17/pound. His weight class, 400 - 500, went from $2.10 - $3.05.

shiza that sucks ds you would been better to finish and sell sides of beef.
