I have a newly purchased cow with twin bulls. She's lost weight, came from bahia grass pastures in South Alabama and is now on fescue in north Alabama. I was going to feed her a CSM/salt mix but I let my feed store lady talk me out of it and bought one of their custom feeds: 10% protein
Cracked corn,CSM,CS hulls,Wheat middlings, and molasses.
I'm working her up to feeding 2% of her body weight. What's the verdict? Stay on the feeding program she's on, or go with a CSM/Salt mix? She's been on this feed for a week.

Feed her the custom feed and let her slowly acclimate to the fescue. It's hard to put weight on a nursing cow.

Work her up to the 2% until she starts putting on some serious flesh and back then her off slowly.

The calves will thank you as twins are tough. How old is she?

If I gave her the CSM mix, it would be 50% CSM, 25% good high calcium mineral, and 25% salt. Free choice.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. She's three years old. But these twins are really draining her.

I know exactly what you mean. I've got a set of twins this year.

Had to seperate her from the other cows too.

Trying to keep up with the goodies she gets to see if the extra pounds of calf are worth it.

By the way, a dairy ration is usually 16%. She might need the Hot Mix in addition to the feed.
