What type of wood shavings make the best bedding? Is yellow pine OK? I have anopportunity to get a bunch of yellow pine scraps, but don't know if they are ok or not.

Ours sleep outside - year round - when they lay down it is on grass or snow - so no help from me. Do not see why not for your shavings though.

If you have the space can you leave them out? Save your pennies and the horses love it.

I failed to mention that the yellow pine is free for the taking. There is enough that I could probably even sell some, but I don't want to sell it if it isn't ok for the horses. People in these parts bed their stalls with wood shavings.
 
I don't know much about stall bedding (mine are all range animals or just sleep in the uncleaned corral), but I would caution about the texture - is it fine and dusty (is it shavings or saw DUST)? and I would also worry about them eating it - you know your animals, so that has to be your call. Pine shavings are fine for other animals, used to sell it in the pet store in big 50lb bale/bags.
 
I bed mine on a fine (not dust, just small shavings) cedar/pine mixture, seem to work fine. I know some type of chips aren't good for them... But I can't recall which type. :oops:

Don't use black walnut because it can cause laminitis. Other than that, I think yellow pine is fine.

Yellow pine shavings are fine - define 'scraps'. Try to stay away from cedar, if possible, because it tends to be dusty. It also turns a very unattractive black color when urinated on, and is not very environmentally friendly since cedar is a natural bug repeller.

I believe Laurel is one, and there is another one that I can't recall either. I don't know about the black walnut, though.
