This year has been pretty good for hornets so far. I've found one nest on the cattle trailer and one nest in the irrigation pump. Other than that, I haven't seen the same number of nests as I have in the past. It has me kind of worried b/c knowing how the world works next year will be worse.

I don't mind the real hornets.. I LOATHE the yellow jackets though.. 2 days ago I was driving with my window down and one somehow managed to fly in, hit me on the side of the face and sting me right by my eye.. hurt like &*ll, felt it all down my face and jaw.. I have long ago declared all-out war on them. They are just pesky, never take the hint, always around your food, etc.
Hornets leave if you shoo them off, and we've even had one that was a "pet"... it would take dead flies you swatter from your fingers and go eat them in a tree.. it would wait for you to swat them.

Here's the biggest member of the wasp family I've ever seen.. some kind of "Horse guardian"

We had a large red hornet in the pool a few weeks ago. I didn't see if he was friendly, just got rid of him. But he must have been twice the size of a regular hornet. Nesi, your story is hilarious!

It bloody well sucked!

Here's the Horse guard wasp.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_guard_wasp
The digger wasp is similar too, but not quite it.. I've only ever seen one of them, it was half drowned in the grass under the irrigation line.

We have TONS of digging wasps here of all kinds, mostly spider wasps, etc.. Have a couple videos of them, they are incredibly strong, and make ants look like disorganized, weak buffoons

Here's one just on a log, I don't think I've ever seen one with the white on it before

And here's one that was digging outside our shop.. the dirt just flies, moves the equivalent of boulders with ease.

Then some colorful ones as well.. incredible metallic colors.. I've seen them in bright green as well

I meant the one you've "trained." I really like stuff like that. We had a sparrow that my wife and son tried to keep around by feeding, but thankfully that didn't work out. He kept making a lot of noise and bumping into the windows. We have a nesting pair of Swenson's Hawks that come back every year that are just amazing to watch. We could really do without the returning gophers, mice, hornets and goatheads, though.

We have our resident Ravens, they're hilarious.. and a couple woodpeckers (Northern Flickers).. of which we had a couple of pets as well
Here's one of them picking out the tasty bits of our salad.. the feta cheese and boiled egg was his favourite
