I must say that yesterday and today were the first days I did not enjoy my job.
Now I did not expect it to be all fun and games.

There was a delivery yesterday since I came in later I was not there to unload the pallets but I was there to put the stock on the shelves. Well when I started my boss had told me that during slow times that we should wipe down the shelves. One of my co-workers had a great suggestion that I passed onto my boss, with the co-worker getting credit for it.
She told me that when stocking the shelves she carries a rag with her so she can wipe the shelves as she stocks them.
I tried that yesterday, it did slow me down a bit but I was getting things cleaned.
Got a couple dirty looks. WTH? I ignored them. My supervisor sent me over to do the pepsi cooler. I started stocking it and noticed some pop was outdated so I pulled it and started going through the rest. Found one bottle that expired in 2010! Another from 2011. Got all the expired stuff out and new stuff in place. Then moved onto the coke cooler. A few bottles were expired but not as many.
I have a bad habit of when I start a job I like to finish it before I go on break or take lunch.

Well today I know they are really not happy with me.
I went to facing an aisle and decided to start washing those shelves. Started washing and decided to check dates. I ended up filling 2 crates full of expired salad dressing and mayo.
One co-worker bit my head off for no reason today too. I just stayed away from her today.
Wish I was working tomorrow morning when they find the other out dated stuff I found tonight and left on the table in the back.

I have tried to be nice to my co-workers but I just feel like I am an outsider there.
Just wondering if I am doing something wrong?

Your checking the shelves and pulling the outdated stock is showing the boss that the other employees are not doing their job.

Ask the boss about the outdated goods. Whether or not he wants you to pull it or what.

I spent 20 yrs working in retail grocery. 15 yrs managing stores. The cost of the outdated items that have to be thrown away is alot cheaper that the fines and potential law suits that come with selling out of date product. most of those products that are out of date are not spoiled so they can be used. you should try and buy it and salvage what you can for personal use and feed the rest to the animals. you should be able to get it for pennies on the dollar. as far as a managers perspective I would look at what your doing and tell the others to follow suit or hit the road. I always promoted self starters and in a short period of time the worthless ones fired themselves.

Chippie I had already asked them and they had said pull them and put them on the counter in the back with a note.
You may be right about the other workers. I know there are 4 of us who are really hard workers and 4 that just do only so much.
One was sent home this last weekend because they were just sitting there at the register doing nothing. I was told that if we are at the register and it was slow face the shelves or wipe them down or at least do something.

M5 they cut the price in half and try to sell it except the pop, the pop companies will credit them the cost. I know it costs them so it does bother me to find something out dated. Really hated the graham crackers last night. A whole lot expired, like around 12 boxes. :( I know there is nothing wrong with them but a lot of customers will not buy them because of the date.

I really like my bosses. It was so funny the other day. I came in to work and my boss was talking with someone so I did not interrupt, but later he looked at me and said, "You didn't tell me good morning." I gave him a huge smile and a big Good Morning. I think that is why my bosses like me besides my work ethic I always say Hi and I am always happy to see them.

.

grocery stores are always throwing away stuff that you can feed the animals- bread, crackers, produce etc! being you work there you should have first dibs on the dumpster stuff. I used to park my truck close to the loading dock so when something had to be thrown away they would just put it in my truck and it helps curb cost on your end and the store end because it does not have to be put in the dumpster and they dont have to empty as often. WIN WIN.

I know what you mean M5. Years ago A friend of mine worked at a large grocery store and she would bring me huge boxes of outdated bagels. We would feed them to some dairy steers we were raising and they loved them. We got a real kick out of it, they would come running if they saw you had bagels nothing funnier than a calf taking a full sized bagel from you and knawing on it. Sounds like you're doing a great job BTW ILH !

I luv... sounds to me like you are making the other co-workers look bad, and some of them just do not appreciate it.. ha. Too bad.. they either need to pick it up, or hit the road.

The slackers may not like you ,but the customers and employers will love you ! Make sure you pull the dented cans as well ILH, not ones with a little ding but the really dented ones as they may be "blown" . If your store does not already have it ,suggest a cart or something for "reduced" ,out of date(soon to be out of date) or discontinued items .

Hopefully you will light a fire under the others behinds with your initiative . ;-)

your just doing your job an finding stuff thats old an out of date that shouldve already been pulled.an thats prolly why they dont like you is because they are lax when they do those jobs.

You're making them look bad. That's not a necessarily a bad thing. But if you set the bar real high right off the bat you be expected to beat that bar every day.
It's good to be gung ho but don't burn yourself out either.

Pretty much, what Hook said. Absolutely, do your job; and if you see things that need to be done, do them. Be a little careful that you don't PO the co-workers -- don't let them perceive that what you are doing is make them look bad. They could set you up to fail with some sort of scheme. Some people have a mind-set that their job duties consist of this, and that, and 2 other things. Anyone doing more could look like a threat. (And maybe they shouldn't be there doing the minimum and getting by -- but that's up to the bosses.)

HD that is where the out dated stuff I found went, in a cart. We also have a sale shelf.
I'll ask about the dented cans.

Thanks BB.

Good point hook. I know my bosses are happy with my work and they have told me so.

Kathie I think it is too late for that. I think I did tick at least a couple off. Oh well life goes on. If they try something to get me then they just show that they are insecure in their ability to do their job.

I used to work for a litigation attorney, who finished many of his letters with: "Please guide yourself accordingly," which said much, without saying much.

Yep a couple of them were ticked. They were not speaking to me today. One person even asked me if I had found any more out dated stuff, it was the way it was asked that let me know they were ticked.
Talked with the co-worker I closed with tonight and asked if they had noticed it. They had but they think it might have been something else.

Yep I found more outdated stuff today.
I could tell my bosses were not happy about it. Guess they were upset because of how lazzy some of their former employees were.

When I worked at HEB,if a customer found an out of date item on the shelf, they could bring it to checkout with the same item in date and get the in date item free. For a while,we had people doing their weekly shopping that way. Some workers got demoted, some got fired.. You don't find expired items anymore..

When I was a kid Granddad used to tell me that there was a union called Lazy SOB's and that I should never join it. Sounds like you have some members there.

I don't belong to that union slick.
Looks like the 2 worst offenders are now gone so hopefully that will be the end of it.

Felt bad last night. Had a customer come in with a check to buy a gallon of milk, well we have a list of people we are not suppose to take checks from for one reason or another.
This customer is one of them. Had to call my bosses to see if we could accept it but they said no.
Had to tell the customer we couldn't accept it.
They left in a huff.
