Would buying weaned holstein calves around 200-300 lbs for $2-300 and feeding them up to 6-700 lbs. pay off? Do I need to feed them out to make any $, instead of 700lbs? I dont ever see any dairy steers when I walk around the lot at the sale barn. Im not sure if no one is doing that here or if its just not worth doing. There is another sale barn farther north of here that sells dairy steers maybe my normal sale barn just doesnt deal with dairy. I have a group of beef calves im about ready to sell and thought I could get more calves this way if there was any money in it. Im just not sure I want to buy 250lb beef calves for over $500.

Dairy steers are some what specialized. Most folks buy day olds and feed them lots of by product after they are weaned. Many of them not worth owning, so the lowest risk option is to buy them off a farm knowing they have had fresh cows milk on time.

Would I sell them at around 700lbs? Whats the best weight to sell them at? Do I have to feed them different that beef calves?

The best way to make a profit is to get them cheep off the dairy farm. They also are not as efficient at turning feed into Lbs as beef breeds are. They also don't bring the $$ at the sale barn that the beef breeds do. You can do it, and you can make money doing it. But like Stocker Steve said, dairy steers are specialized.

Holsteins are just as efficient as beef breeds in turning pounds of feed into pounds of beef. If you are unable to do so you are doing it wrong.

if that's the case, then why are the discounted ??
They cost less to buy, then bring less when sold. It ain't rocket science.
yeah i know that,,but looks like folks would haved cashed in on it enough by now to where it would drive the market on them up.. if they can egual beef calves on feed

Well thats because to many people think holsteins gain poorly, based solely on propoganda. In my world 1 pound of corn equals about 1.7 to 1.9 pounds of hay. Now a holstein will convert about 6.4 to 1, beef 5.9 to 1. Corn is $220 and hay costed me $210.

A person can sell more gain with a holstein than a beef breed. Sure health can sometimes be an issue with the holstein, but consistency will not. Maybe over time the holstein will get mongrelized the same as beef breeds have by hobby farmers breeding black to anything with a pulse, but so far they haven't F'd that up yet. It is all about profit for me not propoganda.
