Filled the car up with gasoline in Oklahoma City today @ $3.37 per gallon. We thought that was pretty good until we got down the street and saw it at $3.45. Later we saw it at $3.33. :o The thing that struck me, though, was the difference in prices. We saw it as high as $3.69. When it was going up every day, everyone seemed to have the same price. Now that it's going down, we're seeing some pretty big differences in price. Hmmmm. BTW, where we filled up (Shell station) Diesel was $4.09.

The stations will raise it just as fast as it goes up at their cost. The gas they are selling today will pay for the gas they have to buy tommorrow. They have to increase their prices rapidly when it goes up, but can lag a little when it falls. Some will lag more than others.

I don't envy the gas stations at all, trying to make money on selling gas. You want to talk about tight profit margins. It is a constant management nightmare to put it nicely. When gas is $3.50/gallon, they give up around 9-10 cents on credit card sales after they pay the card processor. They only make money on cash sales, and that is usually very little.

I have a couple of borrowers who operate gas stations. They make far more money selling pop, candy, and the other stuff than compared to gas.

It was 3.57 here yesterday. It is normally cheaper in Cleburne than in Alvarado. I think it was 3.51 there last time I filled up. I did see it at a station near the freeway on 35 for 3.89. That was yesterday. That's a difference. I still saw folks filling up at that price. I guess they were from out of town, otherwise they would have gone down the road a bit and gotten it cheaper.

Sure enough, it was 3.42 in Cleburne while it's 3.57 and as high as 3.89 here, ten miles away.
