My old 'puter at home has been hijacked by an ad program. It has the ability to change file names so the computer can't find them, has changed my home page a couple times, given me pop ups by the hundreds and takes words in text you are reading and turns them into hot links, among several other irritating things. This thing has the ability to hide and disguise itself so you run down part of it and something else shows up. The old girl was never speedy, but now has slowed to timing it with a calendar. The company that put it out gives you instructions for removing it that don't work. Might even make it worse? This is enough to make the Pope cuss. These bastards should all be cut with a dull knife. I still run 95 so most of the ad/spy programs don't seem to run on it. Couldn't even get Microsoft beta to run right. My old machine is made of junk they were throwing away at work, so the price was right-Hate to spend money on things I don't have to, and for what I use it for its been fine till now. (The squeaking sound you are hearing is my billfold opening.) I guess I'll have to run down a 95 disc, wipe the drive and reload it. Might be able to load 98 so the adaware and such will work better. Any ideas? If anybody wants to buy a condo in Florida, needs cheaper Viagra, wants to learn to play poker like the pros, go on a free vacation, buy a new car for $150, or pretty much anything else-let me know.
I've learned the hard way what they used to say on Hill Street Blues was true- Lets be careful out there.

Chuck, I wish I could help. I had the same problem. The only way I could get rid of it was to call the brother, who is a computer nerd, and he took a lot of files out of my system. Now it is mo' betta. I hate how they attatch the spyware and when you look something up, they start bombarding you with ads along the same line.

do you have a spy ware blocker on your comp? what OS are you running? what kind of comp? do you have a virus scan installed?

my recommendation would be to go out and buy a spyware blocker for your comp and go on line to either mcafee or norton and spend the $50 or whatever it is for the virus scan. i use mcafee myself, some don't really like it. i also use Spy Sweeper for my comp, it is a webroot product. Best Buy or another store can recommend one for you. If you have Windows XP service pack 2, it has a pop up blocker and some adware blockers installed with it.

good luck!

Computers are REAL inexpensive now, compared to several years ago. Take yours to city dump, get a new one. Establish new e-mail addresses. If you have a website, start a new one with new name. If that had been my computer, I would have given it a lead bolus 2 or more times with my .40

By the way, Windows 95 and 98 had lot of problems. We are on XP.

Good luck!

Well, you talk about stupid. I opened an attachment from an email that said "postmaster cannot deliver the email message". Stupid, stupid, stupid. Returned emails do not have attachments. Now when I go to connect to the web, I have a new telephone number to call everytime. Its to an overseas nember and I don't know how to get rid of it. I guess I'll have to take it in and have it worked on. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I knew better. I just had a brain F*&^.

you can click on internet properties and fix all of that and have it save the correct phone # again. if you'd like, i can try to help you. no guarantees. i've been gettin those messages myself. i've juste been sending them to the bulk mail/junk mail folder and deleting them. you can also block them, but they change addy's so much, its hard to keep up.

i hope spy bot works for you. i couldn't get it to do anything. i actually ended up reformatting my hard drive to get rid of the virus, but I couldn't log on to the net at all and had some other probs and i couldn't get into the registry files to clean it up.
