Highest Priced Bull In Any Breed?

Several years back(mid-80's) LLB Angus sold a half interest in a bull for $110,000 or so. That's probably the highest I've ever seen, but I've heard of some going higher.

In March Express Ranches sold an angus for $263,000, and I know that they sold 1/4 interest in a Limousin for $135,000 in 2004. Anybody heard of higher priced bulls or cows for that matter.

Enforcer 107H a Polled Hereford bull ,sold for back along time ago for $250,000 for 1/4 interest. Then in Denver 2006, SHF Radar M326 R125 sold for $105,000; he is also a Polled Hereford Bull. Then Adam/Hirsche in Canada sold a Horned Hereford bull for $135,000 for I think 1/3 interest. Another Horned Hereford bull was CL 1 Domino 212M and he sold in the 2002 Cooper sale for $54,000. Then there was LaGrand Reload 80P ET that sold in 2006 Denver for $86,000. SB 122L Git-R-Done sold for $50,000 in the 2005 Split Butte Sale, then Star Lake Ranch turned around and sold a 1/2 interest for $45,000 out of Git-R-Done. Another one was PW Mohican Nasdaq P316 that sold for $60,000 for 1/3 interest and full possession in the Mohican West Sale this past Fall 2005. Another one was TRM Kudzu that just sold in the 2006 Tennessee River Music Sale for $100,000. Remitall Route 66 sold for $50,000 in the 2005 Fall Production sale at Remitall. I could list off bulls all day, but this is a good start. :cboy:

Last year Stevenson-Basin Angus sold part interest/possession of a son of Future Direction for $245,000...

I watched him sell on Superior Video and the auctioneer stuttered a couple times when he got to those numbers

Now I don't know any details and I could be WAY off, but back in the eighties I heard of a buffalo bull being sold from Saskatchewan to someone in the States for something like two million dollars.....

Here in Australia, the top for a bull is $145,000 for a red Brahman,$160,00 for a Poll Hereford Heifer,$75,000 for a Shorthorn bull,$95,000 for a Droughtmaster bull etc etc. I still doubt some of the big money figures. I bet a few extra head of cattle get thrown in for some of the large amounts paid or credits towards their next sale etc etc etc.

If my memory serves, Lovana (an Angus bull sired by PS Powerplay and consigned by ~RC Price) brought ~$334,000 at auction in ~1988 at the Auburn performance tested bull sale. He was the top indexing Angus bull in that year's sale and then the first 7 frame Angus to run through Auburn's test. I believe half interest was later sold for $1.1 million and Lovana farms (the buyer...the bull's name was not originally Lovana) went bankrupt within 5 years.

Also the big "Lurch" bull (a horned Hereford) was bought for ~$250,000 by Wyoming Hereford Ranch back in the ~late 80s. Somebody more knowledgable about horned Herefords could probably remember his real registration name.

If my memory serves me correctly, Black Watch Nobleman, a Black Angus bull sold for $250,000 for 1/2 interest in about 1968.

Can't remember the particulars.
Thought it was pretty funny though when all the hoopla about 1407 being the world record valued Angus bull came about. Jim Leachman should have known better than that.

In the brangus breed they just sold 2 bulls at mound creek. one sold for $70,000 for 2/3 interest and another sold for $50,000 for 1/3 interest. At this same sale they sold the record paid for a brangus cow for $80,000 for 2/3 pick in any breeding age female in the mound creek herd.

Isn't it amazing the number of people who walk into sales with a stack of credit from just a few particular breeders? We see it far too much. Doesn't say much for the bulls now does it?

Not sure if this is exactly right or not, but Larry Melhof sold a Red Angus bull privately this spring for I think $100,000 for 1/4 semen interest to 10 different buyers. That would make him a $400,000 bull, if you want to figure it like that. Plus he sold at auction a $180,000 bull for 1/2 interest.

I have always heard that the Brahman bull commonly called 'The Millionaire' HK Mr. America 61/9 was called that because he semen share interests sold for a total of $1,000,000.00 making him the first bull to ever syndicate for that much money.

Brandon,
I believe Powerplay sold in '82. He was the first bull on test to have an ADG of 4 lbs. While I was attending AU, some of his sons sold through the AU sale for ~$20,000 -30,000.00.

This isn't the high selling bull of the year but kind of a unique story. When grandpa just started selling bulls a long time customer who used nothing but hereford bulls bought his first red bull from us. He paid close to 2000 and after he bought the bull he drove to town and put the money from his savings into his checking account. When he was driving back to the sale he realized how much money he had spent on one animal, he said he stopped and vomitted. He has stayed with us ever since. 30 some odd years ago that was alot of money.

have a good one

I stand corrected!!! I looked it up and Lovana WAS a 1980 model bull. I wasn't at the sale. My Grandfather had heard through the folks he talked too back then that that was going to be a big time event that year and we talked about going to see the sale for ourselves (not that uncommon for us) but did not(I think we moved round bales around that day or something). I remember the news when the selling price appeared on the Saturday evening local news and we were really shocked. My Grandfather said "it must have been two drunks who didn't know when to quit". I remember all that....I just didn't remember being just 12 years old at the time!! I must be losing it!

I have seen some pretty high priced bulls (and females for that matter) since getting into the Hereford breed. I guess the highest was $250,000 for 1/4 interest for a bull purchased by T-Bone Ranch from DeShazer.

The replies have been very interesting, Thanks. How many of these bulls pay for themselves, and how many are purchased out of a desire to get recognition for buying the highest priced bull and then lose the owners money?

I think you would have to be their accountants to know the answer to that.
