I am a newbie. Be gentle with me.

Yesterday I noticed four bare patches on the back of one of our cows. The patches are on the upper back from forward of the pin bones to about the middle of the loin. They are 3-5 inches in diameter. The skin is as smooth as though the hair had been shaved or plucked. There is not any sign of irritation, etc. on the skin itself.

She is in a pasture with two miniature bulls that are 12-14 inches shorter than her. I have noticed one of them try to breed her several times but he couldn't get his front feet up on top because of his shortness. I am hoping that the bare patches are skid marks (hair scaped off) from his hooves and that he finally succeeded.

Have anyone ever seen marks like this from breeding, or any other cause?

Used to see cows get rubbed a bit around the tailhead when we calved earlier.. Generaly they were getting ready to shed out their winter coats and the bulling that the other cows were doing to them would strip hair off there... Beyond that, I usually equate hairloss this time of year to one of two things 1) Lice and 2) just generally irriatation causing them to rub on every darn thing in the pasture to scratch that itch of the shedding hair.
