Hermaphrodite heifer?

Ai'ed some heifers yesterday. I was pushing them up the shoot and the tech was breeding them. After he bred one he asked if I knew that #16 had a penis. I told him that I wished he'd have said something before he bred her, but he said that everything felt good in her cervix. He showed me and sure enough she has a little penis looking deal poking out of her vulva. I had noticed it when I inserted the CIDR but assumed it was an unusually big clitorous (I told my buddy helping me at the time that I had always thought that these were a myth ).
Anyone ever heard or encountered this?
Any chance that the heifer will settle?
Even if she does calve should I sale her after weaning for fear of promulgating this if I retain anything from her?

I was just wondering about this about this yesterday!! I would definetly cull after her calf is weaned. I would hate to have that gene spread through a herd! Would she spread this to offspring?

I don't think it's a hermaphrodite.
The only hermaphrodite I ever saw was more than 20 yrs ago, a holstein calf that had testicles, but peed like a heifer.

I am guessing it is an unusually large clitorus. I don't want to go any further but some human females have a large clitorus.

To meet the definition of being hermaphrodidic, the anatomy of both sexes has to be more fully developed than this case sounds to be.

Agree. Cows have a prominent clitorus. I was ridiculed for posting that I stimulate the clitorus following deposition of the semen. In fact, clitorial stimulation promotes uterine contractions and enhances conception rate.

The size of her clitorus is not a valid reason for culling.

That is not a penis as your AI technician stated. I don't know. The clitorus is in the proximity of the urethral opening. Upon spreading the labia of the vulva, you will recognize the urethral orifice and clitorus. That seems to eminate from that area but looks more like a cyst, polyp, or swelling of the mucosal lining of the vaginal wall.

Wouldn't the vet have recognized it being a freemartin during the pelvic measurement, or the tech during the AI?

I don't think he means that your heifer is a freemartin. He is saying that he has observed a penis on a couple freemartins he had experience with. Yours is not a freemartin.
