this pic taken 3/10/03 - she was born 3/8/03 at the Winchester Livestock Auction, the mother wouldn't take care of her so they said - I bought her for $40.

I was told by the auction guys the mother was from a group of cows that came from Ohio during the 03' blizzard. Most farmers were running out of food resources.

I wonder if anyone knows any information about what farm she may have come from.

She has been a great cow - she was blind when we brought her home from the auction, but she has taken on the first AI and been a great mother. Just curious where she came from.

sorry - didn't post the picture correctly

you're right - but I was hoping someone would say "yea, such in such a farmer had to ship cattle because of the feed situation, etc" ya know. Even if they let me know in a PM.

Shot in the dark -- wanted to try for info.
Thanks, C

You said she is blind? How big of an area do you keep her in? She sure does look good for a bottle calf, you did a good job.

We ahve a blind calf that we keep in about a couple acre pasture, she does real good as long as something doesn't scare her. It's amazing how well they adjust and learn the boundaries and such.

She was blind when we got her home - she was born at the live stock sale on a sat. 3/8/03, we bought her on a mon. 3/10/03, the mother wouldn't take her and of course the auction personnel didn't do anything for her. Got her home, gave her the first bottle, her eyes were opaque and she couldn't see. I cried. Gave her good milk replacement, and put terramcyin ointment (actually intended for cats & dogs) in each eye daily, as the weeks went by - the white began to leave her eyes and she could see. Today she has about 80% of her sight, we've never restricted her area to run.

My feeling was that her mother lacked nutrition because the blizzard/snows north of us, then she went 3 days without milk or colostrum and that was the reason for the loss in eyesight. She is one tough gale.

Calves can turn quickly to illness and take some time to bounce back to good health.

pic of her one month ago, she's due to calf 10/17 - hoping for a nice hereford heifer this time, her 1st calf was born 9/11/05 at 7:45am - and was a bull and a baldy.

Good looking Hereford there and hats off to you for a good job in raising her. Good luck on the upcoming calf-if it's born on the 17th we'll have the same birthday.

Are you talking about the Canal Winchester sale?

There are lots of cattle in this area that look like her. Not sure you will find out who sold her.

Winter of 03 was a tough one. 38 inches of snow in 3 days. Kids didn't have school for almost 2 weeks.
Hubby was at the Denver Stock Show and called to tell me the temp was 70 out there and he was wearing a t-shirt. I was thawing out frozen water pipes and tarping the space heater under the tractor so I could start it to feed hay.

That was the winter it snowed so much around Christmas. One group of our cows had to eat snow for water for 3 days. We couldn't get a tractor to them to feed hay so when they ran out I walked a half mile through that snow(got snow shoes a few days later) and led them back to the barn lot. I was babysitting the granddaughters for one night and ended up having them 5 days!

we bought the calf at the Winchester Virginia Livestock Auction. I was told a group of pure herefords came in but her mom calved at the auction and wouldn't take her. So my guess is the seller didn't know the cow was pregnant.

We were hit hard with the freezing cold and snow but not like northern area got it. My husband and I plowed snow, and lost a thankfully empty barn during that blizzard. We had built a new barn that all the cattle were in.
