Please be nice the old cow is 10. She is out of Hyline SVF Rito 1116. The Heifer is 18 Months old and she was on the downslope of a hill. She is a Sydgen Rocky Road 2060 daughter, and probably the best bred heifer we have (even if the picture does not show it. She is really deep and thick, just the way we like them (butts and guts).

Would you be interested in selling any of those cows you got because so far you posted 4 pics of 4 cows and I like all 4 of them. Where do you buy your cows?

They only purchases we have made since 1995.
1. The ten year old cow in the picture on her dam - Barrineau Angus Farms
2. One Bull from Barrineau - ~1999
3. One Hereford Heifer the dam of all of the Black Baldies in the pictures - 2000.
4 SAF 8275 Choice Plus 0418 - Sydenstrickers 2001
5 Sydgen Neutron 1344 - Sydenstrickers 2002
6 Sydgen Royal Lass 4108 (pictured above - heifer) Sydenstrickers 2004.

As you can see we are pretty much a closed herd. About 75% of the cow herd desends from our Reg Angus herd that began in the 1960s. A few commercial cows (Charolais-Angus cross, Few with some Brahman influence, and about 8 Black Baldie Cows.) have come and gone.
Trust me SC I am not showing you the bad stuff. We need to have more consistency. On the other hand, I have not shown you the 2 best heifers from the fall 2004 calf crop, or my bull calf out of the ten year old cow (#420) He weaned @ 665#.
I am proud of them but there are still areas where we need to improve.
Weaning records for this fall calf crop
Heifers averaged 543# - 20 head
Steers averaged 566# - 19 head

In praise of older women.

I have nothing bad to say about your old cow - in fact I will praise her.

A couple of old cows that continue to produce are generally a delight to have around.

They tend to just get on with business / keep the herd quiet / help with calming action when you move them from field to field / generally if they have been well kept manage to maintain their condition and their health / and in the end they more than pay for themselves.

Our 12 year old that had a pic posted last winter had a bull calf out of a fella' that has been dead for many years - she just looks after him like he is gold. He will maintain his gonads and probably be the next breeder on the place.

Your girl looks like she is quiet and knows her business - I do not believe you could ask for more.

The heifer looks good - and she will probably produce - but the old girl impresses me for even more reasons: PROVEN longevity and productivity - you are breeding her genetics into the herd - guaranteeing your herd will eventually - with good luck and good management - all have some of her in them - and THAT my friend is what you need to aim for.

Bet you a buck you already know this - just wanted to say it!

As for your comments about the "bad stuff". Well, that is always in the eye of the beholder. Show me a cattleman that does not have a few that should go and I will show you a cattleman who might not be teling the truth.

We ALL have a few that should go - we just never seem to get around to it!

Regards

Bez

that cow is as big as dallas.nice looking cow to boot.she will go 1600lbs or better by my eye. scott

I think she is alittle bigger than that but you all are in the ballpark. She keeps as easy as a 1200 lb cow. We have weighed calves for only 5 years she has 5@109. Average weaning weights (3 heifers, 1 steer, and 1 bull) 615#. This years calf is a bull calf that weighed 635# @ 194 days. He is for sale!!!

if you want i can tighten my weight guess to 1750lbs . rarely do i miss weights 50lbs up or down. scott

I can usually say nice cow to all pic's, but when hers finally loaded, I said WOW! She is one big beautiful girl. When I go look at cows, my boyfriend, goes through my criteria on the way to make sure he knows what I am looking for. (Big, wide hipped, nice flank, perfect top line, more posty than sickle hocked, etc.) When he saw this pic he said "that's the cow you're always looking for". So, very nice cow!

I dont really care how big they are as long as they win shows and bring in big money. Now if your talking like a frame score of a 10 yea that is a little big. Most of the time it is going to be a moderate frame, that is what most people want. Think about this it is easyier for a big cow to have a small calf. It is harder for a small calf to have a bigger calf. A big cow you can AI to a small bull and it will probly be a moderate frame. If you breed a small cow to a big bull they could have calving issues. Bigger is not always better but to me me smaller is never better. If you have the most Structural correct calf in the class but small framed you got a problem when you go to Houtson and other big shows. A little calf really can't compete in the show ring. I know I was in that boat I had the most Structual Correct calf in Houston about 5 years ago I was 7th out of 15 because she was to little. Then taking that calf home putting her on a small bull calving was ok. Then next time I bred her to Townsend Lucky I really did not think she was going to pass the calf. So we pulled it the calf died and to this day she is about 6 or 7 and she still has not put another calf on the gown sense that frist one. Her first calf weight 35-45 pounds. Next time you think you like small better remember this.

Another thing is our 2nd best Donor is huge. Our best donor is out of that big donor. Most bragus breeders know her 174 Update he son won Houston in 2004. Not to say anything bad about Texas but nobody thought we were going to win with that bull. Man you know how people from Texas how they brag that they have the best cattle period. Well the at Houston you should have seen there faces.

I never said that cow don't weight in like bulls. What are you doing weighting that big cow if you can't even weight that cow you bought in person. You were 230 pounds off I am 16 and can be more accurate than that. What happens if you are worming a cow and you guest wrong and give to much are not enough.

well son the old man is entitled tobe rong ever now and then. but heres the real thing. ive been going to sales buying cattle guessing weights long fore you was a gleam in your dads eye.i hate to get so madd at a statement.your still wet behind the ears yet. scott
