First animal in front is my latest problem, as I call him now the maniac! Last Friday, I was getting the cows up, and we have this routine where the bull goes to his grain feeder and waits for his grain, only on friday he wouldn't go, normally I don't like him behind me, but I just thought he was being wierd, so I went around him, and he started doing the foot thing and was approaching me on the 4 wheeler, so i jumped off and ran to the side barn door, and watched as he head butted the 4 wheeler, but then quit, and went to his feeder. Anyways yesterday, we were getting manure hauled out of the barnyard, and the maniac, was locked out, and he saw my husband who he hates, and flipped, bucking, kicking the dirt, he got himself on this pile of dirt, and was going nuts, that he flipped himself sideways, and continued on the ground for 10 more minutes. I'm thinking oh oh, hopefully he was just acting up because he didn't like my husband. This morning I got the cows up, and everything is fine, until he won't go to his feeder, and this time he ran after me on the 4 wheeler, but did stop, and I jumped off and ran for the door, and he was just giving me this really evil glare, so I went thru the barn on the safe side of the fence, and put his grain there, and he ran right over, and I was able to go and finish getting the cows up. funny thing is that the whole time he was eating he was growling. I told my husband he is out of here this Saturday. here is the question, I need tips to get through till the rest of the week, ways to spook a bull, anything?

Thanks GMN

Pardon me mam, but I don't want to wait until someone with more experience than you and I can help you. Do not allow anything that will put you in harms way.

If you are afraid of him , stay away from him tell he is sold.

Wish I could but unfortunately, he is with the cows that need to be milked, so I have to be around him ): I was shaken this morning, but I'm not terrified of him yet, hope for the best, expect the worst!

Keep the girls in the barn until Saturday, then you don't have to worry about going out to bring them up. I would rather have a couple of extra hours of barn cleaning every day until then...

Load him up and take him to the sale barn now. They will hold him for you till sale day.

We don't keep the cows in the barn all the time like the WI farmers, our winters are more mild, where they can go out during the day. We just have a pit type parlor, no bedding facilities for the cows. Thanks for the reply though.

Now this is a possibility I never thought of, could be the answer to all my nightmares. Tonite wasn't too bad, although I had to dump his grain early, to get him interested in anything other than me! Thank you for the good idea!

I think you are alot braver than all of us think...but yes get him out of there...

get rid of that bull now.he will just get meaner.since you milk alone you cant risk him getting you down.an hurting you.

Do you not have a corral or small pasture that you can keep him separated from the cows? Most dairy folks that I know who keep a bull usually keep him away from the herd and just run the cows in as they come into heat. You should still be able to tell when one's cycling because the others will let you know when she's bulling. Dairy bulls are usually pretty viscious and shouldn't be trusted.

Bulls turn mean, when this starts you need to get rid of them immediately. This bull is already past the point of when he should have been sold. Get him off the farm as soon as possible before he kills or severely injures someone

If he's justs now starting it, he's not gonna back off and he knows what he can get away with.No bull is worth getting hurt over.He would go to the sale barn real quick if he was mine and would probably take a few smackins before he went :D

Gail,

We just had a string about a man who was killed by a bull this past week. All this talk about selling him is great, and maybe you can tomorrow morning, but I would shoot him. Your only gonna get slaughter price for him anyway. Is that worth you getting hurt? Or even worrying about getting hurt?

You are brave, I give you that. The next trip I would make would be on the 4 wheeler with a rifle.

All kiddin aside, do you really want to pass him on to somebody else that may get hurt by this bull.

I'm in full agreement with cypress. I'd put him down.

Not to stir the pot, but personally I'd sell him as a balogna bull in the market.

As long as you let the auction staff know that he's a canterous son of a biscuit (write it down on your manifest that he's onery and don't send any registration papers to the mart), why not make some money off of him, as you'll need some cash to replace him/buy semen straws if you're going AI.

I can't imagine anyone buying a bull to use for breeding that comes into the ring without papers and a big 'heads up' on his manifest, but that's just me.

I'd just load his sorry butt into the trailer and send him to hamburger heaven.

Either way, keep yourself safe and let us know how it goes.

Take care.

I know my field man was out the other day, I was telling him about the maniac, and he shared his lovely story with me, about someone he knows, that thought he had a mild bull, until they were doing some herd work, and his bull came up to him, and shoved him in the back, broke several ribs, and perforated his liver, spent a week in the hospital. Not a good story to be telling me at this point. As of now, only 2 days remain till we send him bye bye, I might have a party on Saturday. My husband has been getting the cows up super early before he goes to work in the morning, and then I get them up at night. My son stood in the yard last nite with his BB gun, just in case, and last nite, I didn't even go into the barnyard, because he was in his mood, shoving cows, so I went around and someone stood on the other side of the barnyard with grain, which distracted him, so I could finish getting the cows up. Don't worry, I am taking no unnecessary chances where the maniac is concerned, and believe me I think of all the horror stories I have heard from people as I proceed with caution every nite.

Thank you for your concern.

Gail
