i have a jersey that had her first calf in july and is giving a lot of milk i think she is the only cow that has not been bred. she is a little bony due to so much milk but i dont think she has cycled. anything i can due to get her to come into heat.

What type of feed is she on, and is she getting grain? Cows need proper nutrition to cycle...had a holstein this spring that took 5 months to come in. Took me about that long to figure out the right feed ration for her and get the weight put back on.

very little grain she is the second smallest cow in the herd i keep protein blocks out and free choice min. and grass round rolls. she has a good charola bull calf that was born in july. if i locked her up away from the other cows how much feed and for how long. got a few cows that calved in oct. that the bull should breed in a month or two. and what % protien. i wormed her about 2 months ago.

My vet told me they need higher protein (%)...corn runs about 10% vs barley's 13% or cottonseed's 24%. I like a mix of the three, about 45% corn, 45% barley, 10% cottonseed (shouldn't give too much cottonseed). Cottonseed and barley for the protein, corn puts on fat. Usual grain increase should be around 2lbs per week, not much more.

How long depends on the cow -and her current body condition. Some cows put everything they eat into their milk, but with proper nutrition CAN start cycling. Got to have a LOT of feed though. Figure on at least 30 days, probably more like 60 before she starts.
