Let me start with; I am in South Mississippi, and my primarily goal for this group is to retain heifer calves for breeding females in my own herd not to neccessarily produce the heaviest or black calf the market wants.

I have a group of Horned Hereford sired heifers that will need to be put with a Bull this Spring their mommas are 1/4 Brangus or Angus and 1/8 Beefmaster .

I want future productive females with staying power. Hot and humid environment, I like the Brangus and Beefmaster type cows.

Please give opinion as to what you think would compliment these 1/2 Hereford heifers.

I am leaning toward a certain Breed but am open-minded till this March when I need the bull. Thanks to everyone who replies.

A lot depends on where you sell your calves. A cow may be beautiful to you, but may not sell in your area. Black baldies usually sell good here. Mine are yellow, but I finish and butcher. Yellow are coming on strong in some areas. Black just about sells anywhere.

circlebllc; I don't think you took time to read my whole question, I am not looking to sell calves, yes sure I won't have all heifer calves, but I like you can feed out and market some of my own calves regardless of hide color. I can always go with a Black Bull later when I have reached my carrying capacity and am ready to sell send to local stockyard or direct to feedlot.

Dun, Gert is actually what I am leaning heavily towards, Just curious though Why did you say Red Brangus and not Brangus? yeah I know the other is black, Is it cause of the saying "black cow seeking shade while others are grazing"?

id go back with a hereford and not think twice about it,, knock the edge off that mongrelization then go back with a angus

I agree. If you are planning on breeding with the idea of keeping the heifers, you also need to be thinking ahead on what you will breed those heifers to.

Well, yes and that is where Angus can come in, right? Are am I overlooking something?

After a couple of generations you'll have mostly a red herd which opens up a few more possbilities for marketing. Plus I just happen to prefer red to black

Almost any of your 3/8 Brahman breeds except Braford. Brangus, Gert, Simbrah, Charbray etc.
Please elaborate why. Thanks.

I said not Braford because you will have almost too much Hereford in my opinion. I suggested 3/8 Brahman breeds because that far south you are going to have allot of heat, humidity, and insects and you need a mother cow that can survive the heat have a calf stay healthy and keep going. You can go almost to 1/ 2 Brahman that far south but I think with the 3/8th breeds along with your Beefmaster and Brangus cow base you will have enough. If you are looking for cows that give allot of milk you would want to go with Gert or Simbrah with the Shorthorn and Simmental providing more milk than the Brangus and Charbray. If milk is not a priority since you already have Beefmaster you could go with Charbray to add thickness especially in the hind quarters and the money cuts from the Charlois influence. And finally if you want to have your females where you can save some and sell others and fit the market right now you can go with Brangus.

The wording and punctuation threw me a curve. Looked like you were "excepting" all those breeds. The brangus bull should be great with those young ladies.

IndianCreekcowboy-

With the indicated genetics you have itemized here, I recommend your getting a Beefmaster bull with 'polled' genetics to eliminate the horned influence of your Hereford females, and because of the mothering abilities of the Beefmaster progeny you will produce. You will stamp consistent Phenotype and Genotype with the progeny that your ensuing calves will produce, whatever future matings you decide upon in three years with your replacements. They are good milkers, good producers, and feed lots are realizing their meat-producing abilities more than they have in the past. Their heat and insect-resistant characteristics would fit into your program very well.

Yeah I may not have worded that correctly. But he is located in the part of the country that made the tiger stripe famous along with the F1 females. I am allot farther north than he is and I don't want a female that doesn't have 1/4 - 3/8 Brahman. I think if he gets to far away from Brahman which with the 1/8 Brahman he is at now he is going to have allot of cows sitting under trees and in ponds May - September. If after he makes his females he wants to come back with an English cross then at least the cows will have the heat tolerance.
