HELP! COWS ABORTING

Three of our cows have aborted in the 1st and 2nd trimesters.
If you suspect Lepto, should you first give them oxytetracycline ( is this the same as LA-200) before you use the 5-way vaccine.
I don't understand why our vet doesn't know.

i've never heard of doing that, but that doesnt mean its wrong..
and yes it is the same as la 200. maybe you should consider finding another vet, and get him/her to get you on a good vacination program... if it is lepto and you are not vacinating, there is not much you can do for the bred cows now, but you can get set for future calves. according to my vet, lepto is something you have to vacinate for before you get it. once a cow has it, she has it for that calf. i would still vacinate now and then again just before breeding season.

but find someone or a vet in your area to assess your situation and let them get you going in the right direction.

i think id also pull the blood on those cows. an have them tested for bangs as well. b/c bangs as well as lepto can cause them to slump calves. so id test for bangs an lepto. scott

Don't know what part of the country you live in but in the western states we have "Pine Needle Abortion". Takes about three days from the time the cow eats pine needles to abort. Even with good feed some just like the taste of pine trees, we have cleared pastures and trimmed trees before turning out bred cows. Usually Ponderosa Pine but Lodgepole and Common Juniper will cause abortion also. Don't know if this helps...

BVDV, IBR, Lepto, and other numerous diseases. When I have one abort (2 in last 15 years) I take the cow and the calf to the diagnostic lab in Auburn. If not, tell the vet to have the FULL SERIES of tests done on the blood.

Has anyone else read or heard that they are now finding that many lepto vaccines are actually only giving protection (high titer counts) for a period of weeks? not months? :cboy:
