It is the NWS... New World Screwworm... It was confined to South America, and some lower Central American countries. It has now been detected in several Central American countries and 1 or 2 places in Mexico. Banned all importation of cattle for a 30 day minimum. Set to open back up The end of January. They use sterile flies and drop them by the thousands to breed so the flies lay infertile eggs and the infestation dies out. Trying to keep what they call a "barrier" between the SA countries and Mexico by keeping this fly in the southern areas of Central America, namely Panama... Been several articles about it. From what I have read there is nothing that is killing it that they have found effective...They have a fairly short life cycle so the sterile flies can wipe out a whole infestation in less than 6 months, and the ones that hatch and breed, the female lays sterile eggs that do not hatch etc. I believe the female mates only once so it is effective to eradicate in a natural manner.
