Another 10 days and bulls get pulled. Decided 30 days was enough.




One of the bought heifers at the rented pasture gave a bonus.

 
Good way to select for fertility! We AI, sometimes cleanup once with AI, and then the season is over at 30d. (whether by no more AI or pulling cleanup) It works, but man it sux to see some of those fancy heifers come back in heat after that. It takes some discipline to do, but in the long run, it has produced an excellent set of cows here. We get between 75-85% of our cows bred on first round AI. A couple years we've gotten all cows bred in 21d.

There are five two and three year old bulls with 130 heifers. We had 12 yearlings with 300 sale heifers for 35 days. These were pulled on the 15th as most people want to calve earlier than us but not so early we can keep some should we not get the dollars we need out of them.

Haven’t ever tested them on this short of time before. 35 days will get roughly 80% in calf. We have lots of females, time to push them harder. We will be pulling bulls out of our first calvers at 42 days. Both these groups have the highest value as opens compared to what older cows bring.

That rate with the bulls should give them a good chance of being covered in that time frame if they are so inclined Dave. I would guess you will get at least 80%.

I just sold 2 August calving cows as breds. They were 9 and 12 years old. Made a little money overwintering the smaller one and broke even overwintering the bigger one. But, could have made more feeding some heifers...
 
I guess there are 6 groups this year as the trading heifers are on rented pasture 5 hours from home. A young couple is doing an excellent job with them.
