heifers keep having problems

late last night, had a bull calf out of a heifer and the thing wont stand up, which means he cant nurse. He tries to stand and looks as everything is working meaning all its legs. Is there anything I can do??
 
Give him a BoSe shot. Vitamin A & D shot. Shot of Dex. And if he's not up in an hour nursing, tube him with some colostrum and electrolytes.

Yup, that's what I would do. Not that it means all that much to anyone.

I think it's meaningful. Lots of times having several sources of advice that agree are a pretty good sign that it's a right thing to do.
 
Huge thanks guys, and KY hill I Totally agree! And get this after asking you guys your thoughts and on my way to pic up some more colostrum, I stopped back over at the barn to grab my boots and low and behold the little guys up chasing the heifer around and after being kicked at he prevailed and nursed.

so it worked out after a long night. My next question is what drugs do you guys have on hand? Or a better question is what drugs do I need to have around? But thanks for answering so quickly cant tell ya how much I appreciate it.
 
"what drugs on hand" is a big question. Just respective to calving - there's a thread somewhere on here on "calving supplies".

I personally give everyone a shot of bose and scourgaurd if I haven't vaccinated the mommas already. Some dip navals in iodine - I don't typically but calve in pretty clean environment. I also have some lute in case the momma's don't clean.
 
Keep anything and everything you can afford and get your hands on. And sometimes it still wont be enough. I seem to always have trouble at odd times that don't usually coincide with normal vet business hours so I try to be prepared. Your situation may be different. My neighbor and I usually have to be our own vet.
