Yearling heifer, just turned a year old this month. Wanted to keep to butcher later. Thoughts? Shes b&w face/dexter cross. Not usually one to buy anything crossed with dexter as I prefer higher carcass yield. But I know heifers are smaller maturity anyway. Market prices are good also so might take her there and get a steer instead.

Changing her out for something different is kind of six of one and a half dozen of another, IMO. Personally I'd make her freezer beef if for no other reason than the experience of eating a Dexter cross.

I guess my thought was to sell her and buy a steer so that I have a higher carcass yield. But I think you're right, either decision is not better or worse.

The Dexter crosses I have seen around here have been reasonable size, more the Lowline size.

I saw photos of the dexter bull and he was really nice looking. Mama is average larger frames cow size. Owner said bull was probably 1200-1300lbs.

I think that's what I'll do. Going to let her grow some more though, I think she's got plenty more of that to do.

She's got some left for sure. I'm a little unusual, I like a little lighter and younger on the butchering than most do but that's why God gave everyone a preference.

Yes absolutely! I tend to process mine a bit younger too.
