I have an open yearling heifer that I was supposed to take to a breeder last Thursday. Well, I woke up Thursday morning to a strong smell in the loafing barn. The barn has since cleared, but the heifer is still stinkin'. I tried a bath with Orvus, which just seemed to enhance the stench. It has been in the high 90's here with pretty good humidity also, which is not helping I think. Any magic potions out there?

My brother got sprayed when we were young and my mom wiped him down with "Tomato juice". Seems like it worked but he still had to sleep on the back porch for a few days. ;-)

I am assuming show heifer? I have tried the tomato juice with not much luck. There is some secret mix recipe I got from GFP with baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and some other stuff, but the Mrs. can't remember where I "filed" it at. Here are some that will rid Rover, of the stench you speak of.
Recipe #1:
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
Mix in a bucket (it will fizz).
Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes.
Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes.
Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it.
Rinse thoroughly.

Recipe #2:
1 cup of vinegar
1 cup hydrogen peroxide
1 cup of dish soap
Lather WELL, add water until a good thick coat of lather is worked up and let sit for 10 minutes.
Rinse well, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water to rinse and leave on.

Recipe #3:
1 pint hydrogen peroxide
2/3 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon of citrus-based liquid soap
Sponge mixture onto the dog's fur.
Let sit two to five minutes then rinse with plain water.
Second batch may be needed. Use fresh ingredients.

Recipe #4:
2/3 water
1/3 organic apple cider
Rinse the dog thoroughly, be careful of his eyes.

Take it to the breeder - I assure you the bull will not care.

Time will cure this one. No biggie.

I figure the bull will think it is just another love potion!

While I agree with the other posters on here that the bull won't care, and it's probably too late for this to work now, if it should happen again - hose the cow down with cold water ASAP. If you can get to them soon after they have been sprayed, for some reason that I don't understand, cold water will neutralize skunk. I let my dogs out one night before I had the 'channeler' in place, 2 of them ran around to the front of the house, where a skunk was quite contentedly eating dry cat food, and got sprayed. I hosed them down with cold water, gave them a bath with regular dog shampoo, and there was no trace of skunk smell on either of them, except for the one who took a direct hit in the face and down her throat, the next morning. The one who took the direct hit had skunk on her breath for weeks! :(

ewww id hated to walk iin the barn after she got skunked. mater juice is all i know that might help the smell. scott

Perhaps it was something she ATE? lol, wonder if she developed a taste for skunk after that? :cboy:

lol Skunk juice down one's throat will do that! It's hard to stick a garden hose down a dog's throat without drowning them! As it was, I wasn't sure I wasn't going to drown them hosing their faces off. And, all of this at 1:00 AM! :x

best thing to do at that time of night is to chalk it up to work on in the morning, you may get lucky and wake up to realize it was a bad dream after all.

Well just last night I was standing talking to a friend in the driveway, when i got a whiff of that unmistakeable aroma of death...........with a flashlight I was able to track it down to a deer that was hung up in the fence......right up against the house of that snooty couple from the big city... gee sure hope they don't come in for a few days to get away from the smell of the big city anytime soon, whoooweeee! they would try and find a way to make me responsible no doubt.......................yeeehaw. :cboy:

my response as always would be...backhoe rates are $35.00 per hour , 3 hours minimum. who shall I bill this to?

They are indoor dogs. Leave them outside for the night, and no one sleeps! As far as your neighbors are concerned, tell them it's part of the ambience of the country! ;-)

Aaaaahhhh yes, the fragrance of rotting flesh! If I saw it right in the glare of the flashlight and romantic moonglow, the maggots were doing a real bang up job of devouring it, and should be finished with the next few days........gees, sure wish my employees were that fast. Just not looking forward to the zillions fo flies I will have around now.

I have no doubt about that! They are very efficient, if totally disgusting, little creatures. Man, wouldn't that be nice, to have employees as efficient as maggots are? Employers could conquer the world! And I can't blame you for not looking forward to the flies. Have you considered fly traps? If you happen to have an irrigated set-up, it makes dumping, and cleaning the fly traps a whole lot easier and less smelly! ;-)
