Heifer Acts Drunk

We have a 18 month old show heifer that recently began stumbling a bit on her back legs...like she had one too many... everything else is fine...appetite, drinks water, and even walking but in the run or stall she trips herself. Any ideas...

Amongst a whole lot of ideas with severe neurological effects, I'd need a whole lot more details. I'd not forget about a cervical vertebral instability though with my rule outs.....genetically malformed vertebra which pinches off the spinal cord, gets worse with time. Fits the age and signs...

Thanks Vicki...I wondered about the nerve thing...we had a cow act this way for a while after she had a calf and Doc said same thing about a nerve pinching...

She is a born and bred on our place so we know both her parents and they don't have such a problem so I hope it's not genetic ...After an AI attempt, we put this girl in with the 1800+ bull ...wonder if something happened and if it will get better...

Thanks!

Praying for rain and cooler weather here!!

Don't know if this helps......
We get calves in that get ridden pretty hard(over night before we catch it :( ) And they can get very wobbly on the back legs- they get over it in a few days of rest.
If your bull was too aggressive- she may get over it too.

I think you may have it there. My wife watched the 5 yr old Gelb bull ( a monster but apparently a calving ease type ) we rented this year hop on one of our heifers. Flattened her, splayed right out. Luckily she didn't show any ill signs and still doesn't.

Heres hoping your heifer is alright.

Thank you all... this is my sons best and favorite (of course its his "first born") show project so that just makes it that much worse! She is pretty good... a limi with good disposition AND hair!

 I would never put an 1800 lb bull on a heifer. I have seen all sorts of injuries from broken backs, splayed tendons
and a variety of other injuries. :(

Didn't put him on, he hopped on himself!

Has to do with the heifers size more than the bulls in my books.

And the athleticism of the bull. Neighbor has two large Holsteins, bot habout the same size. One of them almost knocks the cows flat when he mounts. The other doesn;t seem to put much weight on them and doesn;t shove them 10 feet while he's thrusting.

While Guido the Bull is pup gentle, when it comes to work, he's all business and does what he wants!!

Besides the heifer isn't too small herself.. easily 1100 or more and a big hipped, wide butted girl... she's on feed for this fall, winter, spring show circuit.

We'll just watch her and see... I hope it is something that improves now that Guido has moved on...While other indicators are good (feed, water, disposition) are good, I fear what Vicky said about the vertebrae most...

Anyway, with 102+ on the thermometer, I'm pretty loopy too!!

No wacky weed... for lack of rain, nothing is growing including wacky weed...

anyway...Vet was out this morning.. He thinks it is a pinched nerve in front of her legs probably from stumbling while Guido was busy << Holly ...I asked about size and here it didn't matter ;-) >> ...

He gave several shots and I have to give some more tomorrow...He thinks if we separate her and keep her still for a while, it will get better. I hope so, son would be devastated to lose her out of the show ring especially to the freezer! Once again...the when to call and when not to call the vet may have caught me again!

Vicky...he also commented on the same lines you did, but he could feel something that made him give this diagnosis.

I appreciate everyones help!!
