Met a guy that was born in South Korea to parents from very afluent families but grew up in the US. His dad loved America and instilled that in his kids. This guy thinks everything about America is great, the very best except wireless technology. He said that you could get wifi pretty much throughout the whole country and the phones, etc.. are faster. His wife is from South Korea and is a MD there, I believe an OBG. Said that their residents see the most patients in there residencies in the world, and the US see the least. We have the best medical technology in the world, but probably not the most experienced doctors. We also have the most all around knowledgable medical doctors. Most countries don't have the diverse populations that we do. In S Korea, he said they are great at treating liver disease and colon cancer because that is what they see in there genetic population. If you had a heart attack, you'd probably die because they just don't really see them. The cost of medicine here is probably 20x more. My colonoscopy at MD Anderson I think was around 8k by the time the doctors and hospital had everything all added up. He said he is going to see his wife next month and is planning to have a colonoscopy done while there because of genetic predisposition for cancer. Out of pocket, it's $400 out the door. The biggest difference.... people can't sue their doctor. It's against the law. That's good and bad in my opinion. My sister in law just lost her mother to negligence. She had a procedure done in a surgery clinic and all went well. 3 days later she went into a hypoglycemic coma and shock. She's diabetic and no one checked her blood sugar level for over an entire nurse's shift, and when they found her sugar below 20 they started giving her sugar. But they didn't send her to an ER until she coded 5 hrs later. She died in the ER- with the ER doctor being furious they waited so long to send her. That's negligence at a minimum. The lady had raised her family and was in the process of raising two kids from a bad situation that weren't hers. Because of them, I'd like to ring someone's neck. Probably the nurse that stole her pain medication. Probably the doctor who had her case and didn't immediately send her to the ER for the shock she was experiencing. I'm glad that someone gets to compensate the man who lost his wife, the special needs kid is going to need things he can't provide by himself. I'd hate to see all lawsuits eradicated. But, maybe a reasonable ceiling would be a good start.
