I know there are lots of people on here from Texas so I thought I would let you know to pen up the hogs you want to keep this weekend because we hope to thin the population. :D We are headed to the Haskell and Rule area to give this a try. Many years ago a few of us would go the Laredo and bow hunt Javelina but this is our first try with ferals. We decided to that we would start with guns and pull out the bows after we get a hunt or two under our belts. Just hoping for a fun filled relaxing weekend and really hoping my 10 year old can get one. Any and all tips welcome.

Sounds like a lot of fun!! Enjoy yourself!
I have a good friend who flies for one of those "Heli-Hunt" operations down in Texas. He has invited me on several occasions to join him on a hunt... I just may take him up on his offer one of these days!

Why is that area good pig hunting?
I hope it is good hunting. If it is not I will have one really sad 10 year old. Ok a sad 40 something also. I'll post my results next week.

Thats funny.
You can shoot till your arm falls off and there will be more.
Kinda like the old saying about the Chinese Army you could line them
4 abreast and march them into the sea in cadence and never run out.
Problem is you wont shoot many they will leave until the pressure if off.
Have a good time, let us know how many you slay.

I've got hogs too. Trouble with my hogs is that they mostly only come out at night, do their damage and move back to a river bottom (off my property). I've only seen them once in the daylight and that was at the crack of dawn moving from one of my hay field back to wherever the hold up. Got one shot off and knocked one of them down but he got up and ran off.

Wish you lots of luck and if you're successful, come on down to S. Texas and hunt my place.

Well Texas has 5 less hogs but I'm not sure we effected the population much. Having never done this and getting little (read no) instruction from the landowner it took a couple days to figure out what we were doing. We were seeing groups of up to 50 working the wheat fields but we started in the brush and then figured out if that many hogs were in the wheat fields, we should be also. My son and I each shot a boar in the 200-250 range and the other 3 were all 125 pounds and less. Lots and lots of fun was had and many memories made. My son is already saying we need to do this again and I think that sounds like a good plan. So if you are shooting hogs in Texas leave a few for us for next year. :D

Two of the smaller hogs did ribs, and a few roast, and rest ground to sausage. One was really small at around 25 pounds dressed and he will go straight to my smoker whole for a nice slow smoke. The two bigger ones went all to suasage and told the locker to keep the big hog and small hog sausage seperate. Just in case I need to throw out the big hog sausage.

You only have 9,998,000 to go that number just jumped to 11,000,000.
