What type of hay straps (ratchet binders) does everyone use? I've got some older Vulcans that are nice and have been getting S-Lines here lately but have been disappointed with the quality of the last couple boxes. Anyone know of a good American-made ratchet strap that won't break the bank?

No.

Bite the bullet. If you save $200 on a set, it could cost you plenty.

3 ply, double stitched nylon, 10,000 lb. Cinch them down and they stay that way. No stretching. Got to have them if you are double stacking rounds. I wouldn't use any thing less for single stacks hauling down the road.

I've been buying what I thought were good straps but the last batch or so of S-Lines haven't impressed me much. I've got some Vulcans that are close to 10 years old and still in good shape. Does anyone know of any other reputable manufacturers?

You can try the army-navy stores. Mostly I look for rating. There are so many knock offs anymore that I quit buying these kinds of things on eBay. You can find "S-Lines" and "Vulcan's" that are one-ply now. They are not the same. Knock offs?

Would you consider selling those ten year old ones ??

Check eBay items, 180170062610, 130164496301, and 130165159624. All are rated for 10,000 lbs. They are only 27 feet long tho.

Check the sellers feedback. Maybe they are the real deal. Who knows?

Thank you. ebay, a man after my own heart. I wouldn't buy them from ebay unless I saw an actual picture of the item and recognized the mfg name. Rather order them straight from the mfg so if there's any problems I have someone to fuss at. Imagine a lot of seconds get sold thru ebay and the like. And for what it's worth, if you double stack the top rank 27' comes up a bit short but 30' will cover them.

I've started using the military nylon chokers from the front of the trailer. 20 foot gets me almost over the top of the second bale. From from there you can hook the eye of the sling and run a 30 foot strap all the way to the back. I put those on after I have all my cross straps lashed down.

For 18 round bales I use 6 ratchets across the hay. I then run two from front to back over the top.

Edit: I meant to say 35 footers work best for me across the hay. Not much tail left.

I bought one old used one from a garbage sale for $1. It had a jag in it about 1/2 way thru. Took it to my boot repair shop and had the guy patch it up. Don't know the make of it but it is a tough one.

eBay quality scares me as well. Plus, I don't know if I am buying stolen tools/goods from some meth head.

cfpinz, what do you use these "hay straps" for?

To tie his $700 truck to the trailer so his wife can pretend it's able to be driven and she can make the right sounds

We have some that are mounted (welded) to our trailer, not really rachet type though, there is a cheater bar w/ a pointed end to tighten them down, kind of like on a come-a-long, they are 4 in and we use 4 for a load of 17 bales then a chain run lengthwise on the top of the top row of hay bales boomed down.
