My hay season this year will be slim to none. I will not be baling much if any at all I have made a deal with a local hay man and he will be cutting my hay this year to see how it works out with both of us. I look forward to seeing some pictures from yall this hay season and info about the yields. :cowboy: BTW hay and pasture is growing ridiculously slow and I fertilized more than I did the year before very strange year.

Jules...I have noticed the same...I have fertilized, the weather has been pretty good...rain at the right time...the fescue is just not jumping like it should be...I don't quite know what to think. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Tim

Tim,
It is terrible at one point I had stopped feeding and cows mowed the grass down and it just remains low so I keep feeding. This is the first year this has happened but since one morning we get frost and the other mornings we are hot as H..L think the grass is almost stunted or something. You are not the only one. This is my pasture that I put most of my cattle on during the summer its green just not growing since I cut it for hay last October.

I noticed the local feed store and TSC both have stocked KY31 tall fescue a LOT cheaper than Bahia or common bermuda seed. I'm still scared of it from the old endophyte problems and if I brought it in here, my neighbors would probably consider burning me out. I really know very little about fescue, but looking at pastures in other regions, I sure would like to try some tho.

Can you try some in a mix and see how it does or just maybe disc up a half acre and plant it and see how it does ?

Sky, I would say that we are totally opposite here in Middle TN. Our hay ground has just jumped in the last couple of weeks... Fescue coming on strong! By all indications, looks like we will be cutting a few weeks early this year if the weather cooperates with us. It has been two weeks since we sprayed and one week since we fertilized. Rain predicted on and off for the next couple of weeks.

TN have yall been getting hard frosts in the morning there? We are still getting them here where looked like snow on my roof and on the ground then the next day its 75 of a high.

We haven't had what I would call a "hard" frost in a couple of weeks. There were a couple of days last week that we had some light frost but it warmed up fairly quickly. In the 70's and 80's here this week with rain showers on and off. Some old timers around the area are claiming that our snows this year are contributing to the good growth.

Nice. Yea, I say hard frost cause everything looks like it has snow on it when its lightly frosted you only have some spots that are heavier with frost. I am glad yalls year is going good with the grass though ours will get going after a while.

The frost does knock the clove back a bit. Once we get steady 50's at night the grass will take off. A little rain here wouldn't hurt.

Looks like the Ball clover is going to dominate this year. Last year it was the Apache that did well. It is their, just not as noticeable.

Drilled in 3 lbs of Crimson. It's is beginning to bloom. Apache is doing better in this patch....and very little Ball.

I haven't fertilized to grow hay....and it shows.

Been about a month since it was last grazed.

Did y'all miss out on the rain yesterday ? It rained here around 1.5" yesterday.
The grass here has been kinda slow growing to my wheat is growing good but the fuscue is growing slow. I haven't been able to spread any fertilizer yet plan out it this weekend if the ground isn't to wet and solft.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the grass is slow to take off this year. I'm usually done feeding by this time of the year, looks like I'll be feeding for at least another week.

May have gotten an 1/8". Had a thunderstorm around 2 this morning. That put us at 1 inch total for the week. Good luck on your fert.

orchardgrass is going nuts around here. ryegrass (what came up from my planting last fall) is about 10" tall.

fescue isn't doing much, clover is just now starting to take off.

thistles and waterhemp are growing quite well though!!!

My hay started getting cut yesterday. I admit I want to go around the field a couple times just to lay some down but I can resist the urge. I may go out and help rake.
