I have a new holland hay rake. Last few nights i have been raking hay with no problems. but last night all of a sudden in the field the rake stopped working. I would be going threw the feild and all of a sudden the bars would stop rotating..its a rolabar rake. Now when it does that u can look and see the lever to engage and disengage the bars is popping back and forth. if you come to a stop and put it in 1st gear and idel threw the fields then it seems to rake ok with not as many hicups. my thinking is that its in the gear box since thats where the popping noise is coming from and thats where the lever thats moving back and forth when it pops is located. ive tried tieing the lever ovr to the side so it would stay engaged but that didnt work. i was in the field till 10pm lastnite ideling trying to get this hay raked, ive got to find the problem and fix it so i can do the rest of my hay. Any input would b grately appriciated

It could be the dog from the drive shaft that hooks into (sort of) the back of the drive wheel. If the dog pops out (broken spring, weak spring, or dog damaged) it will do that sort of stuff. I had to replace the dog on my rake last year. The speed deal is what makes it sound to me like the dog is the problem.

I found that the thrust nut was a little lose so i tightened in up. the teeth on the gear in the gearbox are kinda worn, so i wander if that dont have sumthin to do with it. ima see how tightning up that nut and messing with thae spring thats in there affects it.

I'd say you're on the right track, must be that time of year, I was out welding on my rake at 11pm last night also. Seems like when the weather is perfect the hay tools don't cooperate and when the hay tools are working properly it starts to rain!

You've hit that 1 right on the head . Just got 1 more 10ac. field to do the il be dun, long as the tractors and baler cooperate
